Description
Alain Voge Cornas Vieilles Fontaines 2015 in magnum is a powerful, deeply structured expression of pure Northern Rhône Syrah from one of Cornas’ most revered sites. Produced only in the very best vintages, this cuvée comes from 80-year-old vines rooted in hard granite, delivering intensity, purity and remarkable aging potential. The 2015 is a monumental, tightly coiled Cornas that captures both the wild character of the appellation and the polish of a master grower.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2015 Vieilles Fontaines is inky, almost opaque purple with a dense, viscous appearance that clings to the sides of the glass. The nose is still somewhat shy in its youth, but slowly unfurls with aromas of crushed stone, blackcurrant, blackberry, dark plum and black cherry, wrapped in notes of graphite, smoked meat, cracked black pepper, violets and a subtle hint of olive tapenade and dried herbs. There’s a pronounced granitic minerality that runs through the bouquet, giving it a lifted, nervy edge.
On the palate, this is full-bodied, tightly structured and focused, with a core of pure, dark, pristine fruit framed by firm, finely etched tannins. Flavors of blackberries, black raspberries, mulberries and cassis are layered with savory tones of bacon fat, spice, iron and wet stone. The wine is powerful yet controlled, with a linear drive that pushes through a very long, persistent finish—more like a finely tuned thoroughbred than a showy blockbuster. This is still in a closed, restrained phase and will reward patience; in magnum especially, it’s built for the long haul. Expect peak drinking from around 2025 onward, with the potential to evolve gracefully for 20+ years.
Production
Vieilles Fontaines comes from the La Fontaine lieu-dit in Cornas, a steep, sun-exposed hillside of decomposed granite that produces Syrah of great tension, minerality and depth. The vines here are around 80 years old, naturally low-yielding and deeply rooted, giving small, concentrated berries. Grapes are typically harvested by hand due to the steep slopes, with strict sorting in the vineyard and at the winery to ensure only perfectly ripe fruit makes it into the cuvée. Fermentation is traditionally oriented, often with a proportion of whole bunches depending on the vintage, to capture both aromatic lift and structural backbone. The wine is then aged in carefully selected barrels (often older oak to avoid excessive wood influence), allowing the profound character of the site and vintage to shine through, rather than the imprint of new oak.
Food & Serving
This is a serious, structured Cornas that shines alongside rich, savory dishes: think roasted or braised lamb, slow-cooked beef short ribs, game such as venison or wild boar, duck with black fruits, or hearty stews and casseroles with root vegetables and mushrooms. It also pairs beautifully with aged, firm cheeses such as Comté or mature Gouda, and with dishes featuring black olives, thyme and rosemary. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity without emphasizing the tannins. In its youth, especially from magnum, give it a long decant—at least 2–3 hours, and up to 4–5 hours for maximum expression. As it matures, a gentler 1–2 hour decant is usually sufficient to let the wine fully open.
Producer
The late Alain Voge was one of the key figures in the revival of Cornas, helping to transform the appellation from a rustic insider’s secret into one of the Northern Rhône’s most sought-after sources of Syrah. Beginning in the mid-20th century, Voge committed to replanting steep slopes that had been abandoned and championed low yields, meticulous viticulture and traditional, terroir-focused winemaking. Today, the domaine is widely regarded as a benchmark in Cornas and Saint-Péray, with Vieilles Fontaines standing as its flagship red—a limited, old-vine selection produced only in top vintages. The estate has earned consistent critical praise for the purity, depth and age-worthiness of its wines, securing its status as one of the great names of the region.
