Description
Alain Voge Cornas Chapelle Saint-Pierre 2016 is a refined expression of northern Rhône Syrah, sourced from one of the highest plots in the Cornas appellation. Aged for 20 months exclusively in older barrels, it combines generous fruit with a poised, savory structure that’s immediately appealing yet distinctly Cornas in character. While it is crafted to be more accessible and less brooding than Voge’s legendary Vieilles Fontaines, Chapelle Saint-Pierre still offers remarkable depth and authenticity.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2016 Chapelle Saint-Pierre shows a deep, dark ruby color with purple reflections, typical of young Cornas Syrah. The nose opens with ripe blackcurrant, blackberry, and dark cherry, layered with cracked black pepper, violets, and subtle notes of smoked meat, graphite, and dried herbs. Gentle hints of leather and tapenade emerge with air, backed by a discreet, well-integrated touch of old oak.
On the palate, this is medium to full-bodied with a vibrant, sinewy structure—classic northern Rhône Syrah without excess heaviness. Juicy black fruits are framed by firm yet polished tannins and a fresh, savory acidity that keeps the wine lively and balanced. Flavors of black olive, cured meat, and a touch of licorice echo on the long, peppery finish. The use of only older barrels preserves purity of fruit and terroir expression, giving a wine that is already highly drinkable but has the backbone to evolve gracefully over the next 8–12 years.
Production
Chapelle Saint-Pierre is drawn from a relatively young parcel planted at the upper reaches of the Cornas appellation, where steeper slopes, granite-rich soils, and excellent exposure give naturally low yields and concentrated fruit. The grapes are harvested by hand to ensure careful selection in the vineyard, often in small crates to protect the berries on their way to the cellar. In the winery, traditional Cornas methods prevail: the Syrah is typically destemmed partially or fully depending on the vintage conditions, followed by a controlled fermentation to extract color, aroma, and structure without harshness. The wine is then matured for 20 months exclusively in older barrels, avoiding overt new oak influence and allowing the expression of granite, spice, and pure Syrah fruit to come to the fore.
Food & Serving
This Cornas is a natural partner for hearty, savory dishes—think roast lamb with herbs, grilled ribeye, duck breast with black pepper and cherries, or slow-braised beef cheeks. It also pairs beautifully with game birds, venison, and earthy preparations featuring mushrooms or lentils, as well as aged hard cheeses like Comté or mature Gouda. Serve at around 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight both its fruit and aromatic complexity. Decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended, especially in its youth, to soften the tannins and allow the smoky, peppery nuances to unfold.
Producer
Domaine Alain Voge is one of the great modern benchmarks of Cornas, widely credited with helping to revive the appellation’s reputation from rustic obscurity to its current status as a world-class Syrah terroir. Founded in the mid-20th century, the estate saw a qualitative leap under Alain Voge, who focused on steep, granite slopes, meticulous viticulture, and careful, terroir-driven winemaking. Today, the domaine farms organically (and in many parcels biodynamically) and is renowned for crafting some of the most precise, ageworthy wines of Cornas and Saint-Péray. Chapelle Saint-Pierre sits within this respected portfolio as a slightly more approachable, high-altitude expression, showcasing the finesse and elegance that Voge has brought to the region’s traditionally powerful reds.
