Description

Alain Voge Cornas Les Chailles 2016 is a vibrant, generously fruited expression of Northern Rhône Syrah, crafted for both immediate pleasure and serious contemplation. Sourced from younger vines on the steep Cornas slopes, it offers a more approachable, supple style than some of the domaine’s more structured cuvées, without sacrificing depth or typicity. Rooted in the long tradition of Cornas as a source of robust, soulful Syrah, Les Chailles channels that heritage into a wine that’s charmingly open-knit in its youth.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2016 Les Chailles shows a deep, vivid ruby-purple hue that hints at concentration and youthful energy. The nose is inviting and expressive, with notes of roasted meat, smoked ham, and cracked black pepper wrapped around ripe black plums, dark cherries, and a touch of violet and warm earth. On the palate, this Cornas is full-bodied yet notably smooth and pliant, emphasizing immediate drinkability. Flavors of juicy black plum, blackberry compote, and ripe blueberry are layered with savory tones of grilled herbs, game, and a subtle olive tapenade character so typical of Northern Rhône Syrah. The tannins are fine-grained and velvety, giving the wine a polished texture, while fresh acidity keeps it lively and food-friendly. Although it was made to be enjoyed on the younger side, it still has enough structure to evolve nicely over 6–7 years from vintage, gaining added complexity and tertiary notes with short- to mid-term cellaring.

Production
Les Chailles comes from younger Syrah vines rooted in the granite-rich, decomposed soils that define Cornas, on steep, sun-exposed slopes overlooking the Rhône. These soils, combined with the continental climate and cooling mistral winds, produce grapes with both intensity and freshness. Harvesting is typically done by hand due to the extreme inclines, allowing for careful selection of perfectly ripe bunches. In the cellar, Alain Voge favors a traditional, minimally interventionist approach: gentle extraction, fermentation in temperature-controlled vats, and élevage in oak (often used barrels) to preserve fruit purity and the distinctive granite-driven minerality, while softening the tannins into the wine’s signature supple profile.

Food & Serving
This Cornas is a natural partner for hearty, flavorful dishes: think grilled or roasted lamb, slow-braised beef cheeks, duck confit, game birds, or a classic pepper-crusted steak. It also pairs beautifully with charcuterie, hard cheeses such as aged Comté or Tomme, and rustic dishes featuring mushrooms, lentils, and root vegetables. Serve at around 16–18°C (60–64°F) to show its full aromatic range. A short decant of 30–60 minutes helps the wine open up, softening the savory edges and allowing the dark fruit and floral notes to shine.

Producer
Domaine Alain Voge is one of the benchmark names of Cornas, widely credited with helping to restore the appellation’s reputation as a source of world-class Syrah in the late 20th century. Founded as a family estate and elevated by Alain Voge’s vision and meticulous work in the vineyards, the domaine focused on low yields, careful farming (now largely organic and biodynamic), and precise, terroir-driven winemaking long before it became fashionable. Today, the estate is considered a reference point in the Northern Rhône, with its Cornas bottlings—ranging from approachable cuvées like Les Chailles to more age-worthy selections—regularly earning high praise from critics and enthusiasts for their authenticity, depth, and sense of place.
