Description
Alain Jeanniard Gevrey-Chambertin 2023 is a classic expression of red Burgundy from one of the Côte de Nuits’ most storied villages. Crafted in small quantities, this wine highlights the purity and finesse of Pinot Noir from Gevrey’s limestone-rich slopes, even in its youth. The 2023 vintage shows vibrant fruit, fine structure, and the understated elegance that has made this appellation a benchmark for serious Burgundy lovers.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2023 Gevrey-Chambertin presents a luminous, medium ruby color with youthful purple reflections at the rim. The nose opens with aromas of wild cherries, redcurrants, and crushed raspberries, followed by subtle notes of rose petals, forest floor, and a gentle touch of spice and fine oak.
On the palate, it is precise and lifted, with juicy red berry fruit framed by lively acidity and silky yet present tannins. Hints of sous-bois, black tea, and a whisper of savory minerality emerge with air, giving the wine both charm and depth. While already approachable in its youth, this 2023 has the structure to evolve gracefully over the next 5–8 years, gaining complexity and softer texture with a few years in the cellar.
Production
Sourced from carefully tended parcels in the village of Gevrey-Chambertin in Burgundy’s Côte de Nuits, this wine reflects classic Burgundian terroir: limestone and clay soils that naturally limit yields and promote concentration and finesse in Pinot Noir. Grapes are typically harvested by hand to ensure optimal selection in the vineyard, with a strict sorting both in the vines and at the winery. Vinification follows traditional methods, with gentle extraction to preserve elegance over power, and fermentation in small vats. The wine is then aged in French oak barrels (a proportion new, the rest seasoned) to add subtle structure and complexity without overwhelming the purity of fruit, before being bottled with minimal intervention to retain its sense of place.
Food & Serving
This Gevrey-Chambertin 2023 is an ideal partner for refined yet comforting dishes such as roast duck, herb-crusted lamb, veal chops, or Burgundy classics like coq au vin and boeuf bourguignon. It also pairs beautifully with roasted root vegetables, mushroom dishes, and aged, semi-hard cheeses such as Comté or Tomme. Serve at 15–17°C (59–63°F) to showcase its aromatics and texture. For optimal expression, open the bottle 30–45 minutes before serving or give it a brief decant, especially in its first few years, to allow the bouquet and structure to fully unfurl.
Producer
Alain Jeanniard is a small, quality-focused grower based in Morey-Saint-Denis, working some of Burgundy’s most celebrated terroirs with a traditional, hands-on approach. As a domaine-scale producer, Jeanniard emphasizes meticulous vineyard work, low yields, and classic cellar practices to capture the nuance and individuality of each appellation. Though not among the largest or most industrial names in Burgundy, the estate has earned a loyal following among Burgundy enthusiasts for wines that are authentic, terroir-driven, and ageworthy, reflecting the character of the Côte de Nuits with clarity and precision.
