Description

A.J. Adam Riesling Trocken 2024 is a finely etched dry Riesling that captures the cool, slatey elegance of contemporary German white wine. This is a wine for those who love precision, minerality and vibrant citrus character without excess weight. Crafted in small quantities, it delivers impressive depth and purity at a refreshingly accessible level. The hallmark of this Riesling is its razor-sharp balance between bright fruit, crystalline acidity and a salty, stony finish. A.J. Adam has built a reputation for elevating classic steep-slope vineyards and working meticulously in both vineyard and cellar, and this entry-level Trocken benefits from exactly that same attention to detail. Although the estate itself is relatively young, it has quickly become one of the most respected modern names in German Riesling, helping to redefine what dry Riesling from this part of Germany can be.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2024 Riesling Trocken shows a pale straw to light lemon color with green reflections, signaling its youth and freshness. Swirl the glass and you’ll pick up an inviting nose of lime zest, green apple, white peach and grapefruit, layered with delicate notes of white flowers, crushed stone and a hint of herbal lift. On the palate, the wine is bone-dry, lively and finely textured, with a sleek, linear profile. Juicy citrus (lime and Meyer lemon) and tart orchard fruits are framed by mouthwatering acidity, while a distinct mineral streak runs through the mid-palate into a long, clean, almost salty finish. The structure is taut but not austere, making it both highly refreshing and quietly complex. Enjoyable now for its energy and purity, it will develop additional nuance—more stone fruit, honeyed hints and deeper minerality—over the next 3–6 years if well cellared.

Production
The Riesling grapes for this cuvée come from steep, slate-influenced vineyards that give naturally low yields and excellent drainage, encouraging deep root systems and pronounced mineral expression. The sites benefit from cool nights and moderate daytime temperatures, preserving acidity and aromatic intensity. Harvest is carried out by hand, often in multiple passes, to ensure optimal ripeness and impeccable fruit selection. In the cellar, the grapes are gently pressed and the must is allowed to ferment slowly, predominantly in stainless steel with ambient or carefully selected yeasts, at controlled temperatures to protect the delicate aromatics. The wine typically rests on its fine lees for a period to gain texture and complexity while retaining a pure, unadorned expression of Riesling without heavy oak influence.

Food & Serving
This dry Riesling is a versatile food partner, ideal with fresh seafood such as oysters, ceviche, sushi and grilled prawns, as well as light fish dishes with citrus or herb-based sauces. It also shines alongside Asian-inspired cuisine—think Vietnamese salads, Thai dishes with lime and lemongrass, or lightly spiced curries—as well as crisp salads, goat cheese, and simple roast chicken with herbs. Serve well-chilled at around 8–10°C to highlight its precision and freshness. Decanting is not essential, but pouring it into a larger white wine glass and giving it a few minutes in the glass will allow the aromatics and minerality to unfold more fully.

Producer
Weingut A.J. Adam is a small, quality-focused estate that has quickly risen to prominence among lovers of fine German Riesling. Working primarily with steep, labor-intensive vineyards on slate soils, the estate’s philosophy is centered on low yields, meticulous handwork in the vines and minimal intervention in the cellar. This approach has earned A.J. Adam a reputation as one of the standout modern growers in its region, with critics and enthusiasts alike praising the tension, precision and terroir expression in the wines. From entry-level bottlings to single-vineyard releases, the estate is now regarded as a benchmark producer for characterful, mineral-driven Riesling.

We all sometimes need a fuss free highly quaffable riesling in our lives. I've used this wine in the restaurant frequently, it's as gastronomic as it is a wine easily drank with friends during apéro. It has the true zesty qualities of a classic Mosel Riesling made with the care of the brother & sister team who understand sense of place in the glass. Enjoy with food or without, serve cold.
