Description
Agripunica Montessu Isola dei Nuraghi 2023 is one of Sardinia’s most admired modern red blends, bringing together native and French grape varieties in a style inspired by the island’s sun, sea breezes, and remarkable ripening potential. Crafted by Agricola Punica in the Sulcis area, it reflects a pioneering vision that helped put this part of southwestern Sardinia on the map for serious, polished red wines.
Tasting Notes
Deep ruby in the glass, Montessu shows the concentration you’d expect from a warm, sun-drenched island vintage. The nose is expressive and layered, with ripe dark berries, black cherry, Mediterranean herbs, spice, and a subtle saline edge that adds freshness and intrigue.
On the palate it is full-bodied and generous, combining juicy fruit with firm structure, fine-grained tannins, and a savoury streak that keeps it balanced. The oak aging adds polish and complexity without overpowering the fruit, and the wine has the depth to develop nicely over the next few years.
Production
Montessu comes from vineyards in Basso Sulcis in southwestern Sardinia, where sandy, clay, and limestone soils and strong Mediterranean light help the grapes reach full aromatic ripeness. The blend is built around Carignano, complemented by French varieties such as Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Syrah, with grapes harvested in the second half of September.
Fermentation takes place on the skins at around 25–30°C with regular pump-overs to extract color, flavour, and structure, followed by malolactic fermentation to soften the wine. It then matures for approximately 15 months in French oak barrels, giving the finished wine added complexity and refinement.
Food & Serving
This is an excellent match for grilled or roasted red meats, lamb, game, hearty pasta dishes, and rich Mediterranean cuisine such as braised beef with herbs or tomato-based sauces. It should be served at around 16–18°C, and decanting for 30–60 minutes is recommended, especially in its youth, to let the aromatics open fully.
Producer
Agricola Punica was founded as a joint venture between Santadi, the San Guido group, and legendary winemaker Giacomo Tachis, whose vision was to reveal the extraordinary potential of Sardinia’s Sulcis region. The estate quickly gained recognition for producing wines of impressive depth and character, combining local identity with a modern, polished style. Montessu has become one of its most successful and distinctive bottlings, helping bring new visibility to Isola dei Nuraghi wines.
