Description

Adega do Vulcão Terra Brum 2023 is a characterful white wine from the windswept Atlantic outpost of Pico in the Azores, crafted from the native varieties Verdelho, Arinto dos Açores and Terrantez do Pico. Grown in tiny stone-walled plots on volcanic soils only meters from the ocean, it captures the raw maritime energy and salinity that make Azorean whites so distinctive. The Terra Brum site, part of a historic vineyard landscape recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage area since 2004, traces its legacy back to the late 18th century, when its wines were shipped as far as the Russian imperial court.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Terra Brum 2023 shows a pale straw to light lemon hue with subtle green reflections, hinting at its youthful freshness. The nose is vibrant and saline-driven, with notes of sea spray, lime zest, green pineapple and fresh pear, layered with wild herbs, crushed basalt, and a delicate floral touch reminiscent of white blossoms. On the palate, the wine is taut, precise and mineral, with Arinto dos Açores giving firm acidity, Verdelho contributing mid-palate weight and citrus-fruit depth, and Terrantez do Pico adding a fine, savoury edge. Flavours of lemon pith, green apple, grapefruit and white peach mingle with a clear volcanic imprint—smoky stone, iodine, and a lingering salty finish that feels very much of the Atlantic. Enjoyable now for its electric freshness, it should evolve nicely over the next 3–5 years, gaining a bit more texture and complexity while retaining its spine of acidity.

Production
Terra Brum is sourced from the historic “Solar Terra Brum” parcel on Pico, where low-yielding vines are planted directly into cracks in the black basalt bedrock, only a short distance from the shoreline. The vines are protected from fierce Atlantic winds and sea spray by a maze of low dry-stone walls, creating a unique microclimate over shallow, volcanic, mineral-rich soils. Grapes are typically harvested by hand in small crates to preserve fruit integrity and brought quickly to the winery. After a gentle pressing, the must is fermented at controlled, cool temperatures—primarily in stainless steel—to safeguard the purity of the Atlantic fruit and terroir expression, with a period of aging on fine lees to build texture and length without masking the wine’s natural tension.

Food & Serving
This Azorean white is an ideal partner for the foods of the sea: think simply grilled fish, oysters, clams, razor shells, octopus salad, ceviche, or sushi and sashimi. It also works beautifully with fresh goat cheese, lightly dressed salads, and dishes featuring citrus, fresh herbs or a touch of salinity such as bottarga or anchovies. Serve well-chilled, around 8–10°C (46–50°F), to highlight its finesse and mineral edge. Decanting is not essential, but giving the wine a few minutes in the glass to warm slightly and open up will reward you with more aromatic detail and nuance.

Producer
Adega do Vulcão is a boutique producer dedicated to reviving and honoring the extraordinary viticultural heritage of the Azores, particularly on the island of Pico, where documented winegrowing dates back to the mid-16th century. Working within landscapes shaped by lava flows and basalt walls, the estate focuses on native grape varieties that are uniquely adapted to the Atlantic climate. By combining traditional, low-intervention vineyard practices with precise, modern winemaking, Adega do Vulcão has become a respected name in the region’s quality renaissance, contributing to the renewed international attention for Azorean wines and helping to preserve a UNESCO-listed cultural landscape for future generations.
