Description
AdamsWein Chardonnay Lohpfad 2023 is a precise, terroir-driven white from one of Rheinhessen’s most exciting Burgundy specialists, Simone Adams. This is Chardonnay in a serious, cool-climate style: elegant, textural and quietly powerful rather than loud or obvious. Grown on the renowned Ingelheimer Schlossberg, parcel Lohpfad, it marries fine oak work with a distinctive mineral backbone, offering a sophisticated alternative to both classic Burgundies and modern German whites.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2023 Chardonnay Lohpfad shows a bright, pale straw-yellow with subtle golden reflections, hinting at both freshness and gentle barrel aging. The nose immediately reveals its time in wood, but in a refined, integrated way: delicate toast and a light smoky spice frame aromas of ripe lemon, yellow apple, pear and white peach. With air, notes of roasted hazelnut, brioche, chamomile and a cool, stony minerality emerge, giving the wine impressive depth and complexity.
On the palate, the wine is precise and focused, with a lively acidity that keeps the creamy texture in perfect balance. Citrus oil, stone fruit and baked apple are layered with subtle vanilla, light roasted nuts and a savory, almost saline edge from the limestone- and clay-influenced soils. The oak is beautifully judged—supportive rather than dominant—leading into a long, linear finish with a gentle grip and a fine, smoky-spicy echo. Enjoyable now with a short carafe, this Chardonnay has the structure and extract to develop gracefully over the next 5–7 years, gaining even more complexity and silkiness.
Production
The Chardonnay for Lohpfad comes from the single parcel "Gewann Lohpfad" within the famed Ingelheimer Schlossberg in Rheinhessen, a southeast-facing site that benefits from morning sun and cooler afternoon conditions. The subsoil of clay marl (Tonmergel) topped by loess loam provides both water retention and mineral tension, contributing to the wine’s refined structure and saline freshness. The grapes are harvested by hand with strict selection in the vineyard to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy bunches are used. In the cellar, a portion of the whole clusters is pressed directly, while the rest undergoes a short maceration on the skins to gain extra aroma and texture. Fermentation and élevage take place in barriques, with no more than about 20% new oak to preserve balance and finesse. The wine rests on its lees in barrel for roughly one year before being bottled unfined, unfiltered and with only minimal sulfur, allowing the character of site and vintage to shine through as purely as possible.
Food & Serving
This is a gastronomic Chardonnay that pairs beautifully with refined, subtly rich dishes. Think roasted poultry with herb butter, veal in a light cream sauce, fine pork dishes, or pan-fried trout and other freshwater fish. It also works wonderfully with lobster, scallops, or monkfish, as well as mushroom risotto, roasted root vegetables and mild to medium-hard cheeses such as Comté or aged Gouda. Serve at 10–12 °C to let both freshness and complexity show; too cold and the nuances will be muted. A brief decanting of 30–45 minutes in a medium-sized carafe is recommended, especially in its youth, to open up the smoky-spicy notes and bring the texture into full harmony.
Producer
AdamsWein is the personal project of Simone Adams in Ingelheim, Rheinhessen, and has quickly become one of the most talked-about addresses in Germany for Burgundian grape varieties. With a strong focus on Pinot and Chardonnay, Simone’s philosophy is rooted in meticulous work in the vineyard, low-intervention cellar practices and an almost Burgundian sensitivity to site and terroir. Her vineyards, many on the historic Ingelheimer Schlossberg, are cultivated with great respect for biodiversity and soil life, and the wines are typically bottled at the estate (Gutsabfüllung) with minimal fining or filtration. In a relatively short time, AdamsWein has earned a reputation among critics and sommeliers for producing some of the most characterful and expressive Chardonnay and Pinot wines in the region, helping to redefine Rheinhessen as a serious origin for fine, terroir-driven Burgunder-style wines.
