Description

From one of the Pfalz’s highest vineyard sites, A. Christmann’s 2021 Vogelsang Großes Gewächs is a distinctive Riesling shaped by ancient limestone soils and a cool, elevated setting. The estate acquired the historic site in 2017, and its first wine from Vogelsang to carry the VDP.Großes Gewächs designation was the 2020 vintage.

Tasting Notes
Clear and crystalline in character, the wine opens with vivid citrus aromas, especially lime, alongside green-apple notes reminiscent of Granny Smith. Subtle stony and smoky accents add depth to the bright, precise nose. On the palate, it is full-bodied and powerful yet retains an elegant finesse, with a touch of exotic fruit complementing its citrus and mineral character. Its structure and balance suggest that it can develop further in the cellar; enjoy it young for its freshness or allow it several years to evolve.

Production
Vogelsang rises above Neustadt towards the edge of the forest, making it one of the Pfalz’s highest vineyard sites. Its traditional vines grow in soils shaped by limestone layers around 150 million years old. The vineyard has been farmed biodynamically, and the grapes are hand-harvested, spontaneously fermented and matured in large wooden casks.

Food & Serving
Serve at around 10–12°C with grilled or pan-seared fish, shellfish, or poultry, and try it alongside dishes with citrus, herbs or a gentle touch of spice. A brief decant can help the wine open up, particularly when young; older bottles are best poured gently and served without extended aeration.
