Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2021 Vogelsang GG is pale lemon with greenish highlights, reflecting its youthful energy and cool-climate origins. The nose is strikingly pure and focused: intense notes of lime, lemon zest and Granny Smith apple are layered over a core of crushed stone, wet chalk and a faint smokiness, with delicate hints of white flowers and subtle herbal nuances. On the palate, this is full of drive and tension, showing both power and finesse. A precise, linear acidity carries juicy citrus and green apple flavors, joined by hints of white peach and a touch of exotic fruit in the background. The stony, saline minerality and gentle smoky undertones give the wine depth and length, while the texture is compact yet elegant, with a long, tightly wound finish. Built to evolve, this 2021 has excellent aging potential: over 8–15 years it should gain more complexity, softening its sharp edges while developing honeyed, spicy and more pronounced mineral notes.

Production
The Vogelsang vineyard lies above Neustadt, stretching up toward the forest and making it one of the highest-lying sites in the Pfalz. The terroir is defined by 150-million-year-old limestone layers that impart a cool, finely mineral character and a distinctive, saline backbone to the wine. Farmed biodynamically since its acquisition by the estate in 2017, the vineyard is worked with great respect for biodiversity and soil health, and the grapes are harvested exclusively by hand to ensure perfect selection. In the cellar, Christmann relies on spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts and gentle, non-interventionist vinification. The Riesling is traditionally matured in large neutral wooden casks, allowing slow development, integration of texture and complexity, while preserving the purity and precision of the fruit and the terroir’s signature.

Food & Serving
This Riesling Großes Gewächs is a superb match for refined, flavor-intense dishes such as ceviche, sashimi, or tartare of sea bass or turbot, as well as classic pairings like shellfish, grilled prawns and steamed mussels. It also shines with lightly spiced Asian cuisine, especially citrus- and ginger-accented dishes, as well as fine poultry, veal schnitzel or vegetable dishes featuring asparagus, fennel or artichokes. Serve well-chilled but not ice-cold, ideally around 9–11 °C, to allow the aromatics and minerality to fully unfold. Young bottles benefit from a short decant of 30–60 minutes to open up, while older vintages can be served directly from the bottle with gentle handling.
