Description

A. Christmann’s 2020 Kapellenberg Erstes Gewächs is an organic Riesling from a distinctive, wind-cooled vineyard in Gimmeldingen. Named for the Nikolaus Chapel below the slope, the site’s cool nights help preserve freshness in the grapes, while its layered soils lend character to this taut, finely structured wine.

Tasting Notes
The nose is initially restrained, with a subtle reductive note that opens with time in the glass to reveal citrus, lemon balm and Granny Smith apple. The palate is focused and vibrant, with firm acidity and a fine, gently austere aromatic profile. Its structure suggests good potential to develop in bottle, with further time likely to bring greater aromatic definition and complexity.

Production
Kapellenberg sits on an exposed rise where cool winds from the Pfälzerwald create marked day-to-night temperature differences, slowing the loss of acidity as the grapes ripen. The vineyard’s deeper soils are calcareous, covered by eroded Buntsandstein. For the 2020 vintage, Christmann harvested healthy, fully ripe fruit in several passes, then matured the wine in large oak vessels.

Food & Serving
Serve at around 10–12°C with grilled or steamed fish, shellfish, or poultry, and try it with dishes featuring fresh herbs or citrus. Its brisk acidity also suits richer preparations such as roast pork. Pour into a glass with room to breathe; a short decant or some time in the glass can help the initially reserved aromas open.
