Description
A. Christmann Riesling Idig Großes Gewächs 2022 is a benchmark dry Riesling from one of Pfalz’s most revered single vineyards. Idig is classified as a VDP.GROSSE LAGE and consistently ranks among Germany’s most sought-after sites for grand cru–level Riesling. This 2022 bottling captures the vineyard’s signature combination of quiet composure, depth, and precision in a remarkably age-worthy white wine.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the wine shows a luminous, pale straw-yellow color with green reflections, hinting at its youth and freshness. The nose opens with finely etched white fruit—ripe peach, honeydew melon, crisp apple, and quince—layered with delicate floral notes and a cool, stony minerality. Subtle hints of fine tobacco leaf, dried herbs, and a gentle smokiness add complexity and depth as the wine evolves in the glass.
On the palate, this Riesling is focused and powerful, yet poised and controlled. A razor-sharp acidity runs through a dense, finely textured core of stone fruit and citrus, supported by a pronounced, chalky-saline minerality that is very typical of Idig. The wine feels both concentrated and weightless, with great length and a lingering, spicy-herbal finish. Built for longevity, the 2022 Idig Großes Gewächs will reward patience, showing beautifully over the next 10–15 years and likely longer under good cellaring conditions.
Production
The Idig vineyard is one of the most prestigious sites in the Pfalz, situated on a relatively steep (around 20% gradient) slope with a southeast exposure, allowing for optimal morning and midday sun without overheating. A constant gentle breeze helps to dry the grapes after any moisture, promoting healthy, perfectly ripe fruit. The soils are dominated by Terra Fusca and limestone, with small but important portions of basalt—material historically brought in from the nearby Pechsteinkopf—giving the wines a distinctive mineral tension and subtle dark spice. Some of the Riesling vines here are still ungrafted (wurzelecht), complemented by carefully selected younger plantings that add vibrancy and freshness to the cuvée. Harvest is carried out by hand in multiple passes to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy berries are selected. In the cellar, A. Christmann follows a precise, terroir-driven philosophy: gentle whole-bunch pressing, spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts, and extended maturation on fine lees in large traditional vessels (and/or neutral oak and stainless steel, depending on the parcel) to preserve purity, structure, and the clear expression of the Idig site.
Food & Serving
This is a gastronomic Riesling that pairs beautifully with refined cuisine. Think delicate yet flavorful dishes such as poached or roasted turbot, sea bass, or cod with beurre blanc; scallops, langoustines, or lobster; or poultry like roast chicken or guinea fowl with light jus and root vegetables. It also shines alongside Asian-inspired dishes with subtle spice and citrus—such as sashimi, ceviche, or lightly spiced Thai or Vietnamese seafood—as well as high-quality vegetable dishes featuring asparagus, fennel, or mushrooms. Serve at 10–12 °C to allow its aromatics and texture to fully unfold. Decanting for 30–60 minutes when young is recommended to let the wine open up, especially if enjoyed within the first few years after release.
