Description

The A. Christmann Riesling Idig Großes Gewächs 2021 in magnum format is a benchmark dry Riesling from one of Germany’s most celebrated single vineyards. Sourced from the prestigious Idig site in the Pfalz, this wine captures both the finesse and power that have made the vineyard a reference point for top German Riesling. Bottled in magnum, it is built for extended aging and for those occasions where only a truly great bottle will do.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2021 Idig Großes Gewächs shows a pale to medium lemon hue with a brilliant, almost crystalline brightness that hints at its precision and energy. The nose opens with an elegant, restrained intensity: white peach, crisp pear, and honeydew melon mingle with notes of quince and citrus zest, gradually giving way to layers of crushed stone, delicate herbal spice, and a fine, almost tobacco-like savoriness. On the palate, this is a dry, tightly structured Riesling with impressive concentration and a striking mineral drive. The fruit profile echoes the nose—stone fruits and white orchard fruit—wrapped in saline, chalky notes and a fine, tensile acidity that provides both tension and length. Hints of dried herbs, subtle smokiness, and a whisper of honey add complexity without weight. The magnum format and the 2021 vintage’s freshness suggest an excellent aging potential of 12–20 years or more under proper cellaring, during which the wine will gain deeper tertiary notes of honey, spice, and brioche while retaining its core of minerality.

Production
The Idig vineyard is one of the Pfalz’s most esteemed sites, characterized by a notable 20% slope and a southeast exposure that allows for optimal morning sunlight and slow, even ripening. Constant gentle breezes help keep the grapes dry and healthy, promoting perfect physiological maturity. The soils are dominated by Terra Fusca (a clay-rich, brown earth) and limestone, with small but significant inclusions of basalt—material historically brought in from the nearby Pechsteinkopf—which adds further mineral complexity. Some of the Riesling vines here remain ungrafted and deeply rooted, complemented by younger, high-quality plantings selected for the Großes Gewächs. Harvesting is done by hand in multiple passes to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy berries are selected. In the cellar, Christmann follows a minimal-intervention philosophy: gentle pressing, spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts, and extended maturation on the fine lees in traditional large wooden casks and/or stainless steel, emphasizing clarity, terroir expression, and refined structure over overt opulence.

Food & Serving
This Idig Großes Gewächs is a versatile yet gastronomically serious partner at the table. It pairs beautifully with refined seafood dishes such as turbot, halibut, or sea bass, as well as scallops, lobster, and delicately prepared shellfish. Its mineral backbone and acidity make it ideal alongside classic German and Alsatian cuisine—think roast chicken with herbs, veal in light cream sauces, or pork tenderloin with root vegetables—and it also shines with sushi, sashimi, and subtly spiced Asian dishes featuring ginger, citrus, or lemongrass. Serve at 9–11°C (48–52°F) to showcase its precision and aromatic complexity. In its youth, especially given the magnum format, a brief decant of 30–60 minutes is recommended to help the wine open up and reveal its full spectrum of fruit and mineral nuances; with maturity, a gentle splash-decant is sufficient to separate it from any sediment.

Producer
Weingut A. Christmann is one of the leading family-owned estates in the Pfalz and a driving force in the renaissance of top-quality, dry German Riesling and Spätburgunder. Located in Gimmeldingen, the estate has been in family hands for generations and is now run with a strong commitment to biodynamic viticulture and an uncompromising focus on terroir expression. Christmann is a member of the VDP (Verband Deutscher Prädikatsweingüter), Germany’s most prestigious growers’ association, and has played a key role in defining and elevating the Großes Gewächs category for dry wines from top sites. The Idig vineyard is the flagship of the estate and consistently produces some of Germany’s most acclaimed dry Rieslings, frequently earning top scores and placement on lists of the country’s finest white wines.
