Description
Abreu Thorevilos Proprietary Red 2010 is a striking Napa Valley Bordeaux-style blend from one of California’s most distinctive vineyard sites. Sourced from the secluded Thorevilos vineyard between St. Helena and Howell Mountain, it reflects the kind of depth, precision, and individuality that has made David Abreu one of the most respected names in fine wine.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a deep, inky color that hints at its concentration and richness. The nose is layered and expansive, with dark fruit, floral accents, graphite-like minerality, and the subtle savory notes that often define great mountain-grown Cabernet blends.
On the palate, the wine is powerful yet refined, unfolding in waves of blackcurrant, plum, cassis, and spice, supported by velvety tannins and a fresh, vibrant backbone. Its structure suggests excellent aging potential, and while already impressive, it should continue to evolve gracefully for many years.
Production
Thorevilos is not part of an official AVA, despite its exceptional reputation, and sits at around 250 meters between St. Helena and Howell Mountain. The vineyard’s complex geology—featuring white, easily fractured tuff minerals and orange-brown gravel—gives the wine its distinctive sense of minerality and precision. The grapes are harvested with great care from this highly individual site and vinified to preserve both intensity and nuance.
Food & Serving
This wine pairs beautifully with filet of beef, grilled lamb, venison, braised short ribs, and rich mushroom dishes. Serve at around 16–18°C and consider decanting for one to two hours, especially if opening it young, to allow its full aromatic complexity and texture to emerge.
Producer
Abreu Vineyards, founded by renowned viticulturist David Abreu, has become one of California’s most admired producers of small-production, world-class wines. Known for its obsession with vineyard character and meticulous farming, the estate has earned an elite reputation in Napa Valley and beyond, with Thorevilos standing out as one of its most celebrated sites.
