Description

Abreu Las Posadas Proprietary Red 2014 is a striking Howell Mountain blend from one of California’s most revered small-production estates, sourced from a hillside site David Abreu acquired in 2000. Sitting above the fog line and protected by surrounding forests, Las Posadas has quickly earned a reputation for producing some of the most expressive and precise wines on the mountain, with the 2014 vintage already showing exceptional approachability and depth.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, it pours an inky, deep purple, almost opaque at the core. The nose is captivating and layered, with vivid notes of mulberry, blackberry, cassis, graphite, scorched earth, and smoldering charcoal, followed by hints of licorice and truffle that add complexity and intrigue. The palate is lavish and full-bodied, with rich dark fruit, polished texture, and the unmistakable structure of Howell Mountain Cabernet. There is remarkable concentration without losing finesse, giving the wine a brooding intensity and a long, resonant finish. While it has the balance to age gracefully for many years, the 2014 vintage is notably open and approachable now.

Production
Las Posadas comes from a 13-hectare hillside property on Howell Mountain, over 600 meters above sea level, where the vineyard rises above the fog line and benefits from natural protection from wind by surrounding pine and fir forests. The soils are highly mixed and well suited to viticulture, and only about five hectares were initially planted to vine after David Abreu purchased the land in 2000. The wine is crafted as a single-vineyard proprietary red from Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Petit Verdot, reflecting meticulous vineyard work and careful winemaking focused on precision, concentration, and site expression.

Food & Serving
This wine pairs beautifully with richly flavored dishes such as ribeye steak, braised short ribs, venison, roast lamb, or truffle-infused dishes, as well as aged hard cheeses. Serve at 16–18°C, and consider decanting for 1–2 hours if opening now to help the wine fully unfold and soften its structure.

Producer
Abreu Vineyards, founded by legendary Napa Valley grower David Abreu, is widely regarded as one of California’s benchmark boutique producers. Abreu is known for his extraordinary vineyard sites, obsessive farming standards, and collaborations with top winemakers such as Brad Grimes. The wines have received consistent critical acclaim, including multiple near-perfect and perfect scores from The Wine Advocate, reinforcing the estate’s status among the elite producers of Howell Mountain and Napa Valley.
