Description
Abreu Las Posadas Proprietary Red 2012 is a striking Howell Mountain blend from one of California’s most revered mountain sites. Made from Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Petit Verdot, it reflects the precision farming and uncompromising standards that have made David Abreu a benchmark name in Napa Valley. This is a wine with serious pedigree, born from a vineyard planted high above the fog line on rugged mountain terrain.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows an inky, dark purple hue that hints at its depth and concentration. The nose is immediately expressive, layered with mulberry, graphite, scorched earth, smoldering charcoal, blackberry, and blackcurrant, with deeper notes of licorice and truffle adding complexity.
The palate is lavishly rich, full-bodied, and intensely concentrated, yet retains a sense of mountain structure and energy. It delivers powerful dark fruit framed by mineral, savory, and earthy nuances, with a long, memorable finish. Built for the cellar, it has the stuffing and balance to age beautifully for many years.
Production
Las Posadas comes from Abreu’s Howell Mountain property, purchased in 2000 and planted at more than 600 meters above sea level, well above the fog line and sheltered by pine and fir forests. The soils are highly varied and exceptionally well suited to viticulture, despite the land’s former use for ordinary agriculture. Only five of the estate’s 13 hectares are currently under vine, underscoring the selective, vineyard-first approach behind this wine. Careful, meticulous farming is a hallmark of the site, and the wine is made as a true single-vineyard expression.
Food & Serving
This is a wine for rich, deeply flavored dishes such as prime rib, braised short ribs, lamb, venison, or truffle-inflected cuisine. It also pairs beautifully with aged hard cheeses and hearty mushroom-based dishes. Serve at around 16–18°C, and decant well in advance to allow the wine to fully open and reveal its layered aromatics and structure.
