Description

Abreu Cappella Proprietary Red 2013 is a standout expression of California Cabernet-based winemaking from one of the state’s most respected estates. Sourced from the historic Cappella vineyard in St. Helena, this wine brings together Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Petit Verdot in a highly focused, site-driven blend. The 2013 vintage is especially noteworthy in California for its concentration and balance, and Cappella captures that year with uncommon finesse.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a deep, dark color with a dense, almost ink-like core. The bouquet is layered and elegant, with notes of dark blue and black fruit, mint, lavender, and a subtle floral sensuality that gives the wine real lift. On the palate, the wine is silky yet firmly structured, with concentrated fruit, polished tannins, and a deep sense of balance. Despite the power expected of a 2013 Cabernet-style blend, Cappella leans more toward refinement than brute force. It should age beautifully over time, though it is already unusually approachable for the vintage and can be enjoyed in its youth with proper aeration.

Production
Cappella is one of the oldest vineyard sites in St. Helena, originally planted in 1869 and later carefully replanted under David Abreu’s direction after years of fallow ground and vine health issues. The vineyard is small, just 2.5 hectares, and its long history combined with meticulous replanting has helped preserve a strong sense of site identity. The 2013 growing season in California was dry and warm, producing small, intensely flavored berries with excellent tannin quality and concentration, while timely late-season rainfall helped bring the grapes to full, healthy ripeness.

Food & Serving
This wine pairs beautifully with prime rib, grilled ribeye, lamb chops, braised short ribs, or roast duck with savory herbs. It also works well with aged hard cheeses and truffle-inflected dishes. Serve at 16–18°C, and decant for 1–2 hours if drinking now to allow the aromatics and tannins to fully open.

Producer
Abreu Vineyards, founded by David Abreu, is one of California’s benchmark producers for exceptional, small-production Bordeaux-style wines. Abreu is widely regarded as one of Napa Valley’s most influential vineyard specialists, with a reputation built on obsessive attention to detail and a deep understanding of site selection and vineyard management. Cappella is among the most celebrated of his vineyard-designated wines and has earned strong critical acclaim, including 96 points from Vinous for the 2013 vintage.
