Description
Abreu Cappella Proprietary Red 2011 is a striking Napa Valley blend from one of the region’s most revered vineyard specialists. Sourced from the historic Cappella site in St. Helena—first planted in 1869—this wine reflects David Abreu’s relentless precision and his talent for unlocking exceptional terroir. It is a rare, highly polished red that shows both the pedigree of the vineyard and the meticulous care behind every bottle.
Tasting Notes
The 2011 Cappella pours with a deep blue-black hue, hinting at its intensity and concentration. On the nose, it is beautifully composed, offering notes of mint, lavender, savory herbs, and a subtle ferrous edge over dark, inky fruit.
On the palate, the wine is silky and surprisingly approachable for such a serious Napa red, with layers of deep blackberry, cassis, and blue fruit framed by firm but well-integrated tannins. The structure is balanced and complete, with enough extract and depth to age gracefully, though it is already expressive and enjoyable in its youth.
Production
Cappella is one of the oldest vineyards in St. Helena, a small 2.5-hectare site with roots dating back to 1869. After being cleared and left fallow for years, it was carefully replanted under David Abreu’s direction, with the vineyard ultimately established in a way that prioritized vine health, uniform ripening, and long-term quality. The wine is crafted from Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Petit Verdot, reflecting a classic Bordeaux-inspired Napa blend shaped by rigorous vineyard work and precise vinification.
Food & Serving
This wine is a superb match for prime rib, filet mignon, lamb rack, venison, or rich mushroom dishes, as well as aged hard cheeses. Serve at 16–18°C for the best expression of its aromatics and structure. Decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended, especially if opened young, to allow the wine to fully unfold.
Producer
Abreu Vineyards is one of Napa Valley’s most celebrated names, built on David Abreu’s extraordinary reputation as a vineyard consultant and land interpreter. Since starting in 1980, Abreu has helped shape some of California’s most iconic wine estates, including Harlan Estate, Screaming Eagle, BOND, and Cliff Lede. His own vineyards—such as Madrona Ranch, Cappella, Las Posadas, and Thorevilos—are admired for producing wines of remarkable purity, concentration, and consistency, earning frequent top scores from the world’s leading critics.
