Abbazia di Novacella Praepositus Valle Isarco Riesling 2023 is a dry, finely aromatic white wine from the high-altitude vineyards of South Tyrol’s Isarco Valley. Defined by striking purity, saline freshness and precise citrus character, it reflects the eight-century winemaking tradition of one of the region’s historic abbeys.

Tasting Notes
Bright and clear in appearance, the wine opens with an expressive yet refined nose of flint, subtle petrol notes, candied citrus, lemongrass and delicate aromatic herbs. On the palate, it is linear and energetic, combining vibrant acidity with a distinctly saline, savoury character and concentrated citrus flavours. The finish is long, fresh and impressively intense. Thanks to its structure, mineral profile and excellent freshness, it can be enjoyed now but should develop added complexity over the next several years in bottle.

Production
The Riesling grapes are grown between 650 and 700 metres above sea level on the sunniest south- and southwest-facing slopes between Bressanone and Varna. The steep vineyards, with inclines of up to 40%, are rooted in moraine soils composed of silty-sandy gravel and abundant stones, conditions that promote slow, even ripening and clear aromatics. Harvest takes place in two stages: most of the grapes are picked in mid-October, while a selected portion remains on the vines until a late harvest in December. Fermentation is carried out in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks using indigenous yeasts, followed by maturation exclusively in stainless steel to preserve the wine’s freshness, precision and natural tension.

Food & Serving
Serve well chilled at around 8–10°C. Its bright acidity and saline, mineral character make it an excellent match for refined fish and seafood dishes, including grilled or lightly sauced fish, shellfish and sushi. It also pairs beautifully with poultry, fresh Alpine cuisine and mature cheeses. Decanting is generally not necessary, although a brief period in the glass allows its flinty and aromatic notes to unfold.

Founded in the 12th century, Abbazia di Novacella is one of South Tyrol’s most important historic wine estates and monastic institutions. The abbey has cultivated vines in the Isarco Valley for roughly eight centuries, combining traditional knowledge with careful, site-focused production. Its Praepositus range represents the estate’s finest expressions and is widely recognised for showcasing the clarity, freshness and mineral character of high-altitude South Tyrolean wines.
