The 2023 Yattarna Bin 144 Chardonnay is one of Australia’s most iconic white wines and the flagship Chardonnay project from Penfolds. Crafted from carefully selected cool-climate fruit, it aims for world-class precision, purity and longevity, with a style that nods to the elegance of great Burgundy while remaining distinctly Australian.

Tasting Notes
Pale straw in the glass, this Chardonnay opens with layered aromas of lemon zest, white peach, nectarine and grapefruit, lifted by brioche, toasted hazelnut, wet stone and white flowers. With air, hints of sea salt, herbs and a subtle smoky note emerge, adding even more complexity. The palate is taut, concentrated and beautifully poised, combining vibrant acidity with a creamy mid-palate and a deep mineral backbone. The finish is long, saline and remarkably refined. While already impressive now, it has outstanding aging potential and should evolve gracefully over many years, gaining further richness and nuance.

Production
Yattarna is sourced only from Penfolds’ best Chardonnay parcels in Australia’s coolest regions, including Tasmania, Adelaide Hills and Tumbarumba. The grapes are selectively hand harvested, gently whole-bunch pressed and fermented in French barriques, with a portion undergoing malolactic fermentation for added texture and complexity. The wine then matures on fine lees for several months, preserving tension, balance and aromatic detail.

Food & Serving
Serve this Chardonnay with lobster, scallops, langoustines or turbot, where its precision and mineral drive can really shine. It also pairs beautifully with poultry and truffle dishes, veal sweetbreads and refined French cuisine. Best served well chilled, around 10–12°C; decanting is optional but can help the wine open up in its youth.
