Description
The 2023 Terroir Case from Weingut Maximin Grünhaus offers a rare opportunity to explore three of the Ruwer’s most distinguished vineyard sites side by side. The six-bottle collection includes one dry Grosses Gewächs and one fruity Kabinett Riesling from each of the historic monopole sites—Abtsberg, Herrenberg and Bruderberg—revealing how terroir and style shape the expression of the same vintage and grape variety.
Tasting Notes
Across the collection, the wines show the cool, precise character associated with Maximin Grünhaus: citrus, green and yellow apple, peach and apricot are complemented by mint, herbs, tea and wet slate. The Abtsberg wines are particularly marked by cool fruit, tension and salty minerality, while Herrenberg often brings a touch more yellow fruit and herbal spice. Bruderberg completes the comparison with its own interpretation of the same Riesling variety and vintage.
The three Grosses Gewächs wines are dry, focused and mineral, with impressive freshness and structure. The Kabinett wines offer a contrasting, almost weightless style, balancing delicate fruit sweetness with lively acidity and around 7–7.5% alcohol. The 2023 vintage gives all six wines excellent energy and definition: the dry wines have the structure for extended ageing, while the Kabinetts should develop beautifully as their fruit, sweetness and acidity harmonise over time.
Production
The wines originate from the steep, slate-rich vineyards of Maximin Grünhaus in Mertesdorf, in the cool Ruwer valley of the Mosel. The collection brings together three VDP.Grosse Lage sites: Abtsberg, characterised by blue Devonian slate; Herrenberg, with its reddish Devonian slate; and Bruderberg. The case contains six Riesling wines from the 2023 vintage—three Grosses Gewächs and three Kabinett bottlings—allowing the influence of individual vineyard sites and wine styles to be compared directly. Specific harvesting and vinification details are not provided.
Food & Serving
The dry Grosses Gewächs wines are excellent with freshwater fish, shellfish, roast poultry, veal, asparagus and dishes featuring herbs or subtle spice. The Kabinett wines are especially versatile with lightly spiced Asian cuisine, sushi, seafood, salads and fresh goat’s cheese, and can also be enjoyed as an aperitif. Serve the dry wines at approximately 10–12°C and the Kabinetts slightly cooler, around 8–10°C. The younger Grosses Gewächs wines may benefit from brief aeration, while the Kabinetts are generally best served directly from the bottle.
Producer
Weingut Maximin Grünhaus is located in Mertesdorf in the Ruwer, one of the coolest and most distinctive parts of the Mosel wine region. Its vineyards form a historic monopole, bringing the Abtsberg, Herrenberg and Bruderberg sites together under one producer and making direct terroir comparisons possible. The estate is particularly renowned for Riesling that combines freshness, herbal complexity, slate-driven minerality and remarkable ageing potential. This 2023 collection showcases that signature through both dry Grosses Gewächs and fruity Kabinett interpretations.
