Penfolds St. Henri 2023 is a powerful yet precise Australian Shiraz, offering dark, concentrated fruit balanced by freshness and savoury spice. Unlike many top-tier Shiraz wines, it is matured without new oak, letting the fruit and structure take centre stage. First released commercially in 1957, St. Henri remains a distinctive counterpoint to Penfolds’ Grange.
Tasting Notes
Deep and dark in appearance, the wine opens with concentrated aromas of blackberry, blueberry and dark plum, followed by black tea, fennel, liquorice and savoury spice. Subtle notes of iron, flint and nettle add a cool, mineral edge rather than the vanilla or toast often associated with new oak.
Production
The 2023 is made entirely from Shiraz sourced across McLaren Vale, Barossa Valley, Frankland River, Port Lincoln and Padthaway, so it is a multi-region blend rather than a single-vineyard or exclusively Barossa wine. A notably cool, wet South Australian season brought above-average winter and spring rainfall, unsettled flowering and a later harvest. The wine spent 12 months in large, seasoned wooden vats, with no new oak used. Its firm, fine-grained tannins and freshness suggest it will benefit from time in the cellar.
Food & Serving
Pair with rack of lamb, Côte de Boeuf, braised beef or game; duck breast is another appealing match. Dishes featuring black olives, rosemary, fennel or a rich jus will complement the wine’s savoury character. Serve at around 16–18°C. While it can be enjoyed young, give it a few hours of air in a decanter to help its structure and aromas unfold.
Producer
Penfolds was founded in South Australia in 1844 and has become one of Australia’s best-known wine producers. St. Henri’s first commercial vintage was released in 1957, and its distinctive use of large, seasoned vats has helped establish it as a long-lived Shiraz with a style of its own—one that favours fruit, structure and bottle development over the influence of new oak.
