Why shop with us?
The 2023 Pinot Noir 'Chestnut Hill' from Sandar & Hem is a site-driven Pinot Noir from the Santa Cruz Mountains, offering precision, freshness, and a distinctly mineral edge. Sourced from a west-facing amphitheater vineyard in Los Gatos, it reflects the cool coastal influence and the region’s reputation for elegant, terroir-focused Pinot Noir.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a bright, translucent ruby tone typical of refined Pinot Noir. The nose opens with red cherry, raspberry, subtle herbs, and delicate floral notes, all framed by a cool, lifted mineral character.
The palate is clear and focused, with lively acidity and fine-grained tannins giving the wine shape and poise. The finish is fresh, persistent, and distinctly savory-mineral, suggesting excellent balance and the potential to age gracefully over the next several years.
Production
Chestnut Hill comes from a vineyard in Los Gatos at around 396 meters elevation, just inland from Monterey Bay in the Santa Cruz Mountains. The west-facing amphitheater site, with sandy loam soils over weathered sandstone and shale, contributes structure, brightness, and a strong sense of place. Selectively harvested grapes, including Dijon and Swan clones, were vinified with a restrained, terroir-led approach to preserve freshness, texture, and varietal purity.
Food & Serving
This Pinot Noir is an excellent match for duck, poultry, veal, mushroom dishes, and mature hard cheeses. Serve slightly cool at 15–17°C, and decant only briefly if needed to open up its aromatic detail and silky structure.
