Description
2023 "Night Sky" GSM Alkina is a distinctive Barossa Valley red that captures the region’s bold personality through a more terroir-driven, contemporary lens. Built on the classic Grenache, Shiraz and Mourvèdre blend, it combines ripe fruit, spice and finesse, while Alkina’s sustainable and regenerative vineyard philosophy adds a sense of precision and place.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a deep ruby color that hints at its concentration and vitality. The nose opens with blackberry, black cherry and dark spice, layered with subtle herbal and peppery nuances that add complexity and lift.
On the palate, the wine is juicy and well structured, with finely grained tannins and a balanced interplay of ripe fruit, savory spice and freshness. The finish is long and composed, suggesting it will drink beautifully now and also has the structure to develop further over the next 5–8 years.
Production
Alkina’s vineyards lie in the northwestern part of Barossa Valley, where sandy loam soils over iron-rich subsoils help promote even ripening and balance in the fruit. The wine was made from selectively harvested parcels, fermented with indigenous yeasts, and partially with whole clusters to build texture and aromatic detail. Aging took place mainly in neutral oak, allowing the fruit and site character to remain at the forefront.
Food & Serving
This GSM is an excellent match for grilled lamb, beef steak, braised game, or Mediterranean dishes featuring herbs and olives. It also pairs well with aged hard cheeses. Serve at 16–18°C, and decant for 30–60 minutes if you want to open up the wine’s spice and supple tannins.
Producer
Alkina is a forward-thinking Barossa Valley producer known for its strong commitment to sustainable and regenerative viticulture. The estate focuses on expressing site and soil rather than power alone, which gives its wines a clear sense of identity within one of Australia’s most famous wine regions. Its growing reputation is built on wines that are both regionally authentic and modern in style.
