Description

From the historic Bates Ranch vineyard in California’s Santa Cruz Mountains, Sandar & Hem’s 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon is a site-focused red with depth, freshness and firm structure. Some vines at the steep, rocky vineyard near Mount Madonna were planted in 1974, giving this bottling a strong sense of place and a link to the region’s winemaking history.

Tasting Notes
The nose offers blackcurrant and dark berries, layered with balsamic notes, floral hints and savoury herbs. On the palate, it is complex and nuanced, with fine tannins and balanced freshness leading into a long, elegant, well-structured finish. The excellent 2021 California vintage is noted for concentrated fruit and natural freshness, and this wine has good potential to develop with time in the cellar.

Production
Bates Ranch lies in the southeastern Santa Cruz Mountains near Mount Madonna and Watsonville, where vines grow on steep, rocky slopes with shallow, gravelly soils at elevations of up to 1,000 feet. The grapes were hand-sorted and fermented as whole clusters, with a gentle approach intended to preserve the vineyard’s character. The wine then matured for around 22 months in French oak barrels.

Food & Serving
Serve at 16–18°C, ideally after decanting. It pairs well with beef tenderloin, lamb, game dishes and aged hard cheeses.
