The 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon “Bates Ranch” from Sandar & Hem is a site-driven Santa Cruz Mountains red with real pedigree and a strong sense of place. Sourced from one of the region’s historic vineyards, it combines mountain-grown intensity with impressive precision, elegance, and aging potential.

Production
Bates Ranch sits in the southeastern Santa Cruz Mountains near Mount Madonna, where steep rocky slopes, shallow gravelly soils, and elevations reaching around 1,000 feet create naturally low yields and concentrated fruit. Parts of the vineyard were planted in 1974, and the site is known for producing structured wines with a clear and honest expression of terroir. For this vintage, the grapes were hand sorted and fermented as whole clusters without destemming, allowing for a gentle, terroir-focused vinification. The wine then matured for approximately 22 months in French oak barrels, adding depth, complexity, and supporting structure without overshadowing the vineyard character.

This Cabernet Sauvignon pairs beautifully with beef filet, lamb, and game dishes, and it also works well with aged hard cheeses. Serve at 16–18°C and decant before drinking to help the wine open up and show its full aromatic range.
