The 2020 Gau-Weinheim Chardonnay trocken from Stumm & Klein is a finely crafted, limited Ortswein from one of Rheinhessen’s most exciting chalk-rich sites. It combines Burgundian-inspired depth with clear mineral precision, making it a standout Chardonnay for lovers of elegant, terroir-driven white wine.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a bright, polished appearance that hints at both freshness and concentration. The nose opens with ripe pear, yellow apple, and white flowers, followed by layers of brioche, almond, and a subtle smoky note. On the palate, the wine is creamy and powerful, yet firmly structured and vibrant. Its fresh acidity and chalk-driven salinity keep everything taut and focused, finishing long, mineral, and mouthwatering. Thanks to its balance and structure, it has strong ageing potential and should develop additional complexity over time.

Production
The Chardonnay comes from the Gau-Weinheimer Kaisergarten, where the vines grow on limestone marl soils with a high carbonate content, giving the wine its tension, minerality, and length. Production is deliberately small-scale, with just 0.5 hectares under vine, making this a rare Ortswein. The grapes are selectively hand-harvested, whole bunch pressed, and allowed to ferment spontaneously in used barriques before spending 15 months on full lees and a further 3 months resting in stainless steel. It is bottled unfiltered to preserve maximum authenticity and texture.

Food & Serving
This Chardonnay pairs beautifully with sea bass, creamy poultry dishes, seafood, and mushroom risotto. It also works very well with aged Comté or fresh to semi-aged goat’s cheese. Serve it chilled at around 10–12°C, and decanting is optional but can help open up its more complex, reduction-driven aromas.

Stumm & Klein is a young project founded in 2019 with a clear focus on high-quality Chardonnay from Rheinhessen’s limestone sites. Though still relatively new, the estate has quickly built a reputation for producing precise, characterful wines with a strong sense of place. The limited production and careful cellar work underscore its ambition to create top-tier white wines with lasting appeal.
