The 2019 Tinto Viúva Gomes from Colares is a rare and unmistakably coastal Portuguese red, shaped by one of the country’s most historic wine regions. Grown just a few kilometres from the Atlantic on deep sandy soils, it captures the distinctive freshness, mineral drive, and old-vine character that have made Colares wines so sought after.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a lifted, elegant profile with a vibrant ruby hue. The nose opens with sour cherry, redcurrant, and wild berries, layered with dried herbs, spice, and floral notes, while aeration reveals deeper nuances of undergrowth, tobacco, leather, and a subtle saline breeze. The palate is taut, precise, and full of personality, with lively acidity, fine-grained tannins, and a marked maritime mineral edge. It finishes long, savoury, and fresh, and has the structure and balance to age gracefully for many years.

Production
Viúva Gomes sources fruit from the legendary Colares vineyards, where vines grow on deep coastal sand soils that have historically protected them from phylloxera and preserved many old, own-rooted plantings. The grapes are hand-harvested and carefully vinified to preserve the region’s pure expression, then matured in large wooden casks and on the bottle to build complexity while maintaining freshness and transparency of terroir.

Food & Serving
A superb match for lamb, game birds, grilled tuna, and Mediterranean braised dishes, as well as mature cheeses, mushroom-based plates, and classic Iberian cuisine. Serve at around 16–18°C, and decant if possible to allow the wine’s aromatics and layered coastal character to open fully.
