Far Side Mourvèdre 2019 from Beaumont is a distinctive South African red that captures the cool-climate character of Bot River beautifully. Made with a minimal-intervention approach, it stands out for its depth, freshness, and clearly defined sense of place — a style that reflects Beaumont’s role as one of the region’s early pioneers of natural winemaking.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a deep, dark ruby color that hints at its concentration and structure. The nose is layered with blackberries, plum, wild herbs, black pepper, leather, and earthy spice. On the palate, it is powerful yet fresh, with firm, tactile tannins, lively acidity, and a mineral-edged finish that lingers with savory spice and dark fruit. This is a wine built for the table and for a bit of bottle age. While it is already expressive now, its structure and acidity suggest very good aging potential over the next several years, during which the savory and earthy notes will likely become even more integrated.

Production
The Mourvèdre comes from Bot River, a cool-climate area shaped by maritime breezes and mineral-rich soils that help preserve freshness while adding depth and texture. The grapes were hand-harvested and carefully selected before undergoing spontaneous fermentation with natural yeasts. The wine then matured for around 18 months in used French barriques, a gentle élevage that preserves the fruit and terroir-driven character rather than masking it with oak.

Food & Serving
This is an excellent match for lamb, venison, slow-braised beef, and other rich meat dishes. It also works well with hearty stews, grilled foods, and Mediterranean-style dishes with herbs and spice. Serve at around 16–18°C, and decanting for about an hour is recommended to help the wine open up and show its full aromatic range.
