The 2018 Vigna del Convento Montepulciano d’Abruzzo DOC from Valle Reale is a terroir-driven red wine from one of the region’s most admired sites near Capestrano in Abruzzo. Made from a historic vineyard by an old convent, it combines mountain freshness, mineral depth, and the unmistakable character of Montepulciano in an elegant, age-worthy style.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a deep ruby color with vibrant purple reflections, hinting at both concentration and freshness. The nose opens with dark berries, cherry, and plum, layered with wild herbs, spice, and a distinct mineral edge that reflects the vineyard’s stony soils. On the palate, the wine is powerful yet precise, with ripe tannins, lively acidity, and a refined sense of balance. The finish is long, structured, and elegant, and while already expressive, it has the structure to develop beautifully over the next several years.

Production
Vigna del Convento comes from a historic single vineyard in Capestrano, in the heart of Abruzzo, where high-altitude vines grow on limestone and gravel soils under the cool influence of the Apennines. The grapes are selectively harvested by hand, then spontaneously fermented, before aging in large oak casks and partially in concrete, with extended lees contact to build depth, texture, and finesse.

Food & Serving
This Montepulciano is an excellent match for lamb, beef, venison, braised meats, and mature hard cheeses. Serve it at 16–18 °C; decanting is recommended if the wine is young or if you want to open up its aromatic complexity and soften the tannins.
