Description
Warre’s is one of the oldest and most respected British Port houses in the Douro Valley, and this 1997 Vintage Port shows exactly why the name carries so much weight. Sourced from steep, high-altitude terraces in the Porto region, it combines concentration, structure, and the kind of depth that only a top vintage year can deliver.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it displays a deep ruby core with subtle garnet reflections, a sign of both richness and graceful development. The nose opens with blackcurrant, blackberry, and dried plum, followed by notes of dark chocolate, warming spice, and a faint hint of maturity.
On the palate, it is powerful and tightly woven, with ripe tannins, balanced sweetness, and a dense, layered texture. The finish is long, spicy, and persistent, and while it is already showing beautifully, this vintage still has excellent aging potential for those who prefer a more evolved Port experience.
Production
The grapes come from schist soils in the steep terraces of the Douro Valley, where the stones retain heat and help the vines ripen fully in the region’s hot, dry climate. The fruit was hand-harvested and traditionally foot-trodden in lagares before fermentation was stopped with grape spirit, preserving the wine’s natural sweetness and intensity. After roughly two years in large oak casks, it was bottled in 1999 as a Vintage Port designed for long cellar aging.
Food & Serving
Best enjoyed with blue cheese, especially Stilton, as well as dark chocolate, nut-based desserts, or simply on its own after a fine meal. Serve at 16–18°C, and decant before drinking if you want to separate any sediment and allow the wine’s aromas to open fully.
Producer
Warre’s was founded in the early 18th century and remains one of the most historic British Port houses in Portugal. It has long been associated with elegant, structured Vintage Ports that reflect the character of the Douro rather than sheer power alone. Over the centuries, the house has earned a strong reputation for consistency, longevity, and classic Port style.
