Weingut Rings Riesling Saumagen Großes Gewächs 2024

Weingut Rings’ 2024 Saumagen Großes Gewächs is a dry Riesling from one of the Pfalz’s best-known Grand Cru sites, in Kallstadt. Its south- and southeast-facing basin and limestone-rich soils give this distinguished vineyard a strong sense of place.

Tasting Notes
The nose is restrained and refined, opening with subtle yellow-fruit and white-flower aromas, followed by dark spice, a faint smoky note and delicate hints of maturity. On the palate, the wine is dense, fresh and assertive, balancing its concentration with Riesling’s vibrant character. Its structure suggests it should develop with bottle age, though the producer’s recommended drinking window is not provided.

Production
The Saumagen vineyard lies in a basin opening to the south and southeast, with soils of loess and calcareous marl rich in limestone. The Rings brothers’ parcels have been certified organic since 2017. Grapes are selectively hand-harvested and gently pressed, then undergo spontaneous fermentation and spend ten months on the lees in 600-litre barrels and stainless-steel tanks. The wine is neither fined nor given additives, apart from a late addition of sulphur.

Food & Serving
Serve lightly chilled, around 10–12°C, with roast poultry, pork, freshwater fish or dishes featuring herbs and mushrooms. A short spell in the glass can help its initially reserved aromas open; decanting is optional, especially for a young bottle.
