Description

Wegeler Oestricher Lenchen Riesling Eiswein-Auslese “Christwein” is a remarkable 1970 German sweet wine, harvested on Christmas Eve—24 December 1970. A rare combination of Riesling Eiswein and Auslese designation, it offers exceptional historical character and the concentrated sweetness associated with grapes picked under frozen conditions. Presented in a 0.7-litre bottle, it is a compelling choice for collectors and lovers of mature German wines.

Tasting Notes
The wine is expected to show a deep golden to amber colour, reflecting its considerable age and long development in bottle. Its mature bouquet combines preserved and dried fruit with honeyed notes, warm spice and the complex, tertiary aromas that can emerge in venerable Riesling sweet wines. On the palate, the wine is rich, sweet and concentrated, balanced by the lively acidity characteristic of Riesling. Notes of ripe fruit, honey and spice lead into a persistent finish. As a wine from 1970, its condition and drinking profile will depend greatly on storage and provenance; it is best approached as a mature collector’s bottle rather than judged solely by youthful freshness.

Production
The wine comes from the Oestricher Lenchen vineyard in the Rheingau, a historic site known for producing expressive Riesling with a balance of ripeness and acidity. Its designation as Eiswein indicates that the grapes were harvested while naturally frozen, concentrating sugars and flavours in the fruit; the “Auslese” classification denotes a selection of particularly ripe grapes. The vintage was harvested on 24 December 1970, an unusually late date that gives this bottling its distinctive “Christwein” name. Specific harvesting temperatures and vinification details are not available.

Food & Serving
Serve well chilled, at approximately 8–10°C, allowing a little time in the glass for its mature aromas to unfold. Its sweetness and acidity make it a natural partner for fruit-based desserts, apple or pear tart, crème brûlée, pâté and selected blue cheeses. Decanting is not usually essential for a mature sweet wine, but careful decanting may help separate any sediment; open gently and taste first, as very old bottles can be delicate.

Producer
Wegeler was founded in 1882 by Julius Wegeler and has become one of the historic names associated with premium Riesling from Germany’s Mosel and Rheingau regions. The estate is particularly recognised for its focus on terroir-driven wines and for its long tradition of producing age-worthy Riesling. This 1970 Oestricher Lenchen bottling reflects both the heritage of the producer and the Rheingau’s enduring reputation for noble sweet wines.
