Description

A remarkable bottle from the celebrated 1976 vintage, this Forster Ungeheuer Riesling Trockenbeerenauslese is a rare example of Pfalz noble-sweet wine with significant bottle age. Made from highly concentrated, late-harvested Riesling grapes, it combines the richness and intensity of a Trockenbeerenauslese with the distinctive character of one of Forst’s most renowned vineyards. Carefully stored examples offer a fascinating glimpse into the ageing potential of fine German Riesling.

Tasting Notes
Deep golden to amber in appearance, the wine is likely to show the luminous colour and viscosity associated with mature Trockenbeerenauslese. Its bouquet is richly layered, with notes of ripe and dried fruit, honey, sweet spice and evolving tertiary nuances that may emerge with air. On the palate, concentrated fruit and natural sweetness are balanced by Riesling’s characteristic acidity, creating a complex, harmonious expression with a persistent, elegant finish. At this age, the wine should be approached as a mature collector’s bottle rather than a young, fruit-forward dessert wine. Its condition will depend greatly on storage, fill level and closure, but well-preserved bottles can remain captivating for many years. Allow the wine time in the glass to reveal its full aromatic complexity.

Production
Forster Ungeheuer is a prestigious vineyard site in Forst, in the Pfalz, known for producing powerful and long-lived Rieslings. Trockenbeerenauslese is made from individually selected, overripe grapes—often affected by noble rot—which naturally concentrate sugars, flavour and acidity as they dehydrate on the vine. The resulting wine is made in small quantities and designed for extended maturation, with the 1976 vintage now offering the additional complexity of several decades in bottle.

Food & Serving
Serve well chilled at approximately 10–12°C, allowing the wine to warm slightly in the glass as it opens. It is an excellent match for foie gras, blue cheeses, fruit-based desserts, crème brûlée and pastries containing nuts or spices; it can also be enjoyed on its own as a contemplative after-dinner wine. Decanting is not essential, but carefully standing the bottle upright and pouring gently can help separate any sediment. A short decant may benefit the wine if it appears closed, although older sweet wines are best handled with care.

Producer
Wegeler, also associated with the Deinhard name, has a long-standing reputation for producing and trading distinguished German Rieslings. The company’s historic connections to the Mosel and its work with prestigious German vineyards have made it an important name among collectors of mature Riesling. This 1976 Forster Ungeheuer bottling reflects the era’s appreciation for carefully made, age-worthy noble-sweet wines from the Pfalz.
