Description
Wegeler’s 1994 Deidesheimer Herrgottsacker Riesling Trockenbeerenauslese is a rare and highly collectible German sweet wine from one of the Pfalz’s celebrated vineyard sites. Made from individually selected, noble-rot-affected grapes, this mature Trockenbeerenauslese combines remarkable concentration with the freshness and precision that allow great Riesling to develop for decades.
Tasting Notes
The wine displays a deep golden hue, reflecting its age and concentration. Its expressive bouquet suggests ripe peach, apricot, honey and candied fruit, complemented by a subtle mineral character. On the palate, it is rich and lusciously sweet, yet lifted by vibrant acidity that keeps the wine balanced and energetic. A long, persistent finish brings together honeyed fruit and a delicate mineral note.
With more than three decades of bottle age, this Riesling is already wonderfully mature, while its sweetness and acidity give it the structure to evolve further in a well-kept cellar. Expect increasing complexity and refinement over time.
Production
Trockenbeerenauslese is among Germany’s most concentrated Prädikatswein styles. The grapes are harvested in highly selective passes once noble rot, caused by Botrytis cinerea, has naturally concentrated their sugars, flavours and acidity. The fruit for this wine came from the Deidesheimer Herrgottsacker vineyard in the Pfalz and was crafted to preserve the balance between richness, sweetness and Riesling’s characteristic freshness. Specific details of the fermentation and maturation are not provided.
Food & Serving
Serve lightly chilled at 8–10°C. Its concentrated sweetness makes it an excellent partner for crème brûlée, tiramisu, fruit-based desserts and ripe stone fruit, while its acidity also allows it to complement foie gras or blue cheese. It is equally rewarding as an aperitif or served on its own. Decanting is not essential, but a brief, gentle decant can help open the wine and separate any mature sediment; pour carefully if the bottle has been stored horizontally.
Producer
Wegeler is a historic German wine producer with roots in the Mosel and a longstanding association with fine Riesling. Its wines are known for expressing the character of distinguished vineyard sites and for their capacity to mature gracefully. This Deidesheimer Herrgottsacker bottling represents the estate’s commitment to traditionally crafted, age-worthy German Riesling and offers collectors a rare opportunity to experience a mature Pfalz Trockenbeerenauslese from the 1994 vintage.
