Description
Wegeler’s 2003 Bernkasteler Doctor Riesling Trockenbeerenauslese is a rare, intensely sweet Mosel wine from one of Germany’s most celebrated vineyards. Produced in the exceptional Trockenbeerenauslese style from individually selected, highly concentrated grapes, it offers remarkable richness balanced by Riesling’s naturally vibrant acidity. The Bernkasteler Doctor has long been regarded as one of the Mosel’s most prestigious sites, making this limited 375 ml bottle a particularly distinctive collector’s wine.
Tasting Notes
The wine displays a deep golden hue, reflecting its maturity and concentration. Its expressive bouquet opens with ripe peach and apricot, followed by layers of honeyed fruit and a subtle mineral character.
On the palate, it is opulent, luscious and beautifully sweet, yet kept fresh by a precise thread of acidity. The finish is long and persistent, combining candied stone fruit, honey and a delicate mineral impression. Already mature and highly rewarding, this 2003 TBA also has the structure to develop further in careful cellaring, provided the bottle has been stored under suitable conditions.
Production
The grapes come from the steep, renowned slopes of the Bernkasteler Doctor in the Mosel, where the slate-rich terroir contributes both concentration and mineral freshness. For this Trockenbeerenauslese, only exceptionally ripe, shrivelled grapes are selected by hand, naturally concentrating their sugars and aromas. The resulting wine is made in very small quantities and reflects the rigorous selection associated with Germany’s highest sweet-wine categories.
Food & Serving
Serve well chilled at approximately 8–10°C. Its concentration makes it an elegant match for fruit-based desserts, crème brûlée, apricot or peach tarts, and blue or washed-rind cheeses; it can also be enjoyed on its own as a luxurious aperitif or after-dinner wine. Decanting is generally unnecessary, although carefully pouring the wine into a small carafe can help separate any mature sediment and allow its aromas to open.
