Villa Papiano Romagna Modigliana Riserva Probi di Papiano 2022

Villa Papiano’s Probi di Papiano is a refined Sangiovese di Romagna Superiore Riserva from Modigliana, Emilia-Romagna. Made predominantly from Sangiovese with a touch of Merlot, it combines the variety’s traditional regional character with extended maturation in French oak and bottle. The wine reflects a centuries-old heritage: Sangiovese has been cultivated in Emilia-Romagna since at least the late 17th century, while the DOC designation was established in 1967.

Tasting Notes
Deep ruby-red in appearance, Probi di Papiano offers an intense, expressive nose marked by ripe red-fruit aromas and the subtle complexity gained through long maturation. On the palate, it is balanced and structured, with concentrated fruit, polished tannins and an elegant freshness typical of Sangiovese from the hills of Romagna. The 2022 vintage can be enjoyed now with decanting, while its structure and Riserva ageing give it the potential to develop further in bottle over the coming years.

Production
The vineyards are situated on the hills of Romagna at approximately 450 metres above sea level, where a temperate climate, sandstone-rich soils and traditional terraced vineyards provide favourable conditions for Sangiovese. The blend consists of 95% Sangiovese and 5% Merlot. Fermentation takes place with temperature-controlled maceration in stainless-steel tanks, followed by malolactic fermentation in oak. The wine is then matured for 12 months in French oak tonneaux and barriques, followed by a further 12 months in bottle.

Food & Serving
A versatile partner for richly flavoured dishes, this Riserva is well suited to roast lamb, grilled or braised beef, game, aged cheeses and traditional Emilia-Romagna cuisine. Serve at approximately 16–18°C. Decant for 30–60 minutes before serving, particularly when enjoying the wine in its youth, to open its aromas and soften the tannins.
