Vieux Télégraphe’s Châteauneuf-du-Pape Rouge La Crau 2023 is a refined expression of one of the appellation’s most renowned vineyards. Elegant rather than overtly powerful, it combines the warmth of Grenache with the structure of Mourvèdre and Syrah, while a touch of Clairette brings freshness. From the historic La Crau lieu-dit, this is a classic Rhône red with the substance to develop beautifully over many years.

Tasting Notes
The wine shows a deep ruby-red colour, with a fragrant nose of ripe red and dark berries, Provençal herbs, violet and subtle spice. On the palate, it is fine and composed, offering supple fruit, well-integrated tannins and a fresh, mineral character beneath the generous Southern Rhône warmth. Mourvèdre and Syrah add depth and savoury complexity, while the blend remains balanced and elegant. Although approachable with decanting, the 2023 has the structure and concentration to mature gracefully. In a suitable cellar, the finest vintages of Vieux Télégraphe can develop for 25 years or more, gaining greater savoury nuance, leather and dried-herb complexity over time.

Production
The grapes come from La Crau, a highly regarded sector of Châteauneuf-du-Pape known for its stony terrain, where rounded surface stones retain heat during the day and release it at night. The blend is based on Grenache, supported by Mourvèdre, Syrah and Clairette. Traditional Rhône vinification is used to preserve the wine’s depth, aromatic character and sense of place, resulting in a red that prioritises balance, finesse and long-term development.

Food & Serving
Serve at approximately 16–18°C after allowing the bottle time to come to temperature. Decanting for around one to two hours is recommended when enjoying the wine young, both to open its aromas and to soften its youthful structure. It pairs especially well with roast lamb, beef, duck, game birds, hearty stews and Provençal dishes with herbs, garlic and olive oil. Mature cheeses also make an excellent match.
