Description
A rare 1961 Riesling Eiswein from Vereinigte Hospitien (Sanctus Jacobus), sourced from the Serriger Schloß Saarfelser Vogelsang vineyard in the Saar district of Mosel-Saar-Ruwer. Bottled in the traditional 0.7-litre Cabinet format, this historic German sweet wine combines concentrated fruit, vibrant acidity and remarkable cellaring potential—an exceptional bottle for collectors and lovers of mature Riesling.
Tasting Notes
The wine displays a deep golden colour, with the intensity and patina expected from a mature Eiswein of considerable age. Its expressive nose suggests apricot, ripe peach and honey, complemented by the layered, mellow character that develops in well-preserved aged Riesling.
On the palate, it is sweet, fruity and richly concentrated, balanced by refreshing acidity that keeps the wine lively rather than heavy. The finish is long and lingering, with echoes of stone fruit and honey. At more than six decades old, its condition will depend greatly on provenance and storage, but well-kept bottles may offer a fascinating mature drinking experience.
Production
The wine comes from the Saar, a cool-climate area known for elegant Riesling with pronounced acidity and excellent longevity. As an Eiswein, it was made from grapes harvested while naturally frozen, concentrating sugars, acidity and flavour in the berries; this requires suitable weather conditions and careful picking. The resulting wine was bottled in the classic Cabinet format, a historic designation associated with refined, high-quality German wines. Specific vineyard and cellar details for this individual 1961 bottle are not available.
Food & Serving
Serve well chilled at approximately 8–10°C. It is excellent as an aperitif or alongside fruit-based desserts, apricot tart, peach desserts, crème brûlée and mild blue cheese. The wine can also be enjoyed on its own at the end of a meal. Decanting is not usually essential for a mature sweet Riesling, but careful decanting may help separate any sediment and allow the wine to open; handle the bottle gently and assess it soon after opening.
Producer
Vereinigte Hospitien is one of the historic wine-producing institutions of Trier, with roots in the city’s long tradition of combining charitable work, healthcare and viticulture. Its vineyards along the Mosel and Saar are associated with classic Riesling production, while the Sanctus Jacobus name reflects the institution’s historic identity. A 1961 bottling from the Serriger Schloß Saarfelser Vogelsang vineyard offers a distinctive glimpse into the heritage of Saar wine and the remarkable ageing ability of German Riesling.
