Description
A remarkable survivor from the celebrated 1964 vintage, this half-bottle of Vereinigte Hospitien’s Sanctus Jacobus Serriger Schloß Saarfelser Vogelsang Riesling Beerenauslese Cabinet offers a rare glimpse into the historic wines of the Saar. Produced from intensely ripe Riesling grapes, it combines the concentration expected of Beerenauslese with the freshness that allows great Saar wines to mature gracefully for decades.
Tasting Notes
The wine is expected to show a deep golden colour, possibly with amber highlights developed through its long maturation. Its bouquet is complex and mature, with aromas of preserved and dried fruit, honey, spice and subtle tertiary notes that may emerge with air. On the palate, it is rich and full-bodied, balanced by a refreshing thread of acidity and finishing with impressive persistence.
At more than half a century old, this is a wine to approach as a mature collector’s bottle rather than a youthful, fruit-driven Riesling. Its condition and evolution will depend greatly on storage, ullage and closure, but well-preserved examples can offer remarkable depth and harmony. Open carefully and allow time in the glass for the aromas to unfold.
Production
The wine comes from the Serriger Schloß Saarfelser Vogelsang vineyard in the Saar, part of the historic Mosel-Saar-Ruwer growing region. The cool Saar climate and steep vineyard sites are traditionally associated with Riesling wines of pronounced acidity, fragrance and longevity. As a 1964 historical bottling, detailed records of the harvesting and vinification are not available; the Beerenauslese designation indicates exceptionally ripe, selectively harvested grapes, while the historic “Cabinet” terminology reflects the classification language of its era.
Food & Serving
Serve lightly chilled, around 10–12°C, allowing the wine to warm gradually in the glass. Its sweetness, acidity and mature fruit character should pair beautifully with foie gras, pâté, blue cheese, fruit-based desserts and gently spiced Asian cuisine. It can also be enjoyed on its own as a contemplative dessert wine. Decanting is not essential for such an old bottle and may risk exposing it too rapidly to oxygen; instead, stand it upright before opening, pour gently and taste immediately, using a small decanter only if sediment requires removal.
Producer
Vereinigte Hospitien is one of Trier’s historic wine institutions, with roots reaching back to the early nineteenth century. Its vineyards and cellars are closely connected with the wine heritage of the Mosel and Saar, where Riesling has long been shaped by steep slopes, a cool climate and mineral-rich soils. Bottles such as this 1964 Sanctus Jacobus release reflect the region’s long tradition of producing sweet Rieslings capable of extraordinary ageing.
