Description
The Vinum Nebbiolo d’Alba DOC 2020 is a pure, site-focused expression of Nebbiolo from the hills around La Morra, one of Piemonte’s most prized communes. Crafted from hand-harvested grapes and given a long, traditional élevage in large Slavonian oak, it bridges classic Barolo elegance with the more approachable charm of Nebbiolo d’Alba. Awarded 90 points by James Suckling, this cuvée stands out for its balance of aromatic finesse, structure and drinkability. Its unique appeal lies in the combination of southeast-facing vineyards, careful manual selection and extended maturation, which lends extra depth and polish rarely seen in Nebbiolo d’Alba. While the DOC has historically offered a more accessible gateway into the world of Nebbiolo, wines like this underline the appellation’s growing reputation for serious, cellarworthy reds.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, The Vinum Nebbiolo d’Alba 2020 shows a luminous garnet hue with brick-tinged edges that hint at its time in wood and bottle. The nose is immediately alluring and classical: rose petals and dried flowers mingle with fresh raspberry and wild strawberry, lifted by notes of cinnamon, black pepper and a gentle, sweet spice from the large casks. With some aeration and development in bottle, deeper layers of licorice, leather and dark chocolate begin to emerge, adding complexity and a subtle savory depth.
On the palate, this is a refined, medium-bodied Nebbiolo with a sophisticated, harmonious profile. The fruit is ripe yet poised—red berries and cherry—wrapped around a core of lively, refreshing acidity. Tannins are fine-grained and silky, offering structure without harshness, making the wine approachable in its youth while still clearly built on Nebbiolo’s hallmark backbone. The finish is long, precise and gently spicy. Enjoyable now with a short decant, this 2020 has the concentration and structure to age gracefully for 8–12 years from vintage, gaining more tertiary notes of leather, tobacco and cocoa over time.
Production
The grapes for The Vinum Nebbiolo d’Alba DOC 2020 come from southeast-facing hillsides around La Morra in Piemonte, where clay-limestone soils, warm days and cooling night breezes help Nebbiolo ripen slowly while retaining freshness and aromatic lift. The vines are harvested by hand in mid-October, allowing for meticulous bunch selection in the vineyard and again at the winery. After destemming and gentle crushing, the must undergoes a controlled fermentation over 10–15 days, extracting color, perfume and fine tannins without over-extraction. The young wine is then matured for a minimum of three years in large Slavonian oak casks, which preserve Nebbiolo’s purity while adding subtle complexity, followed by at least six months of bottle ageing before release to ensure integration and elegance.
Food & Serving
This Nebbiolo d’Alba is a natural partner for classic Piedmontese and broader Italian cuisine. Its vibrant acidity and fine tannins make it a superb match for mushroom risotto, vitello tonnato, truffle dishes, osso buco, pasta al ragù, charcuterie and semi-aged cheeses. Serve at 18–20 °C in large Burgundy-style or Nebbiolo glasses to allow the bouquet to open fully. Decanting for 45–60 minutes is recommended, especially in its first years, to soften the tannins and reveal the full spectrum of floral, spicy and earthy nuances.
Producer
The Vinum is a quality-focused producer dedicated to transparent, terroir-driven expressions of Italy’s great grape varieties, with a particular emphasis on Piemonte. Working closely with growers in prime communes such as La Morra, The Vinum combines traditional know-how—like extended ageing in large Slavonian oak—with thoughtful, contemporary cellar practices to craft wines that are both authentic and refined. Their Nebbiolo d’Alba bottlings exemplify the estate’s aim: to offer wines that convey the character of their origin with clarity, while remaining approachable and gastronomic. Recognition such as 90 points from James Suckling for this 2020 vintage underscores the growing reputation of The Vinum within the region and among discerning Nebbiolo lovers.
