Description

The Vinum Barolo Riserva DOCG 2016 is a powerful yet finely chiselled expression of a truly great Barolo vintage. Crafted only in exceptional years, this Riserva captures the cool, long 2016 growing season in La Morra, where Nebbiolo ripened slowly on sun‑drenched, south‑west facing slopes. Extended aging in large Slavonian oak and in bottle has shaped a wine of impressive structure, aromatic purity and classical Barolo elegance.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, The Vinum Barolo Riserva DOCG 2016 shows a clear garnet red hue with delicate orange reflections at the rim, already hinting at its evolution and complexity. The nose is layered and deep: floral notes of rose petal and violet rise first, followed by pure red cherry and wild berries, then unfolding into nuances of tobacco, truffle, roasted coffee, sweet baking spices and a gentle touch of vanilla from large oak casks. On the palate, the wine is precise, structured and decidedly aristocratic. The hallmark Barolo acidity is vibrant yet integrated, supporting a core of ripe red fruit, dried flowers and savory earthiness. Tannins are firm but refined and already starting to melt into the wine, giving a long, persistent finish that echoes with spice, leather and a subtle mineral edge. While already drinking beautifully, this 2016 Riserva has the balance and backbone to evolve gracefully for well over a decade, rewarding cellaring until the mid‑2030s and beyond.

Production
The fruit for this Barolo Riserva comes from south‑west facing hillsides around La Morra in Piemonte, a commune known for producing some of the most elegant and perfumed Barolos. The vineyards benefit from excellent exposure, cool nights and a long growing season, allowing Nebbiolo to ripen slowly and fully while retaining vibrant acidity. Grapes are hand‑harvested in mid‑October, ensuring only the finest bunches are selected at optimal maturity. Fermentation takes place over 10–15 days at controlled temperatures to gently extract color, aroma and tannin without harshness. The wine is then matured for a minimum of five years in large Slavonian oak casks, followed by at least two additional years in bottle, a patient, traditional approach that polishes the tannins and builds remarkable complexity before release.

Food & Serving
This is a classic food wine that shines alongside rich, savory dishes. Think truffle‑driven cuisine, braised beef, game, slow‑cooked lamb shank, mushroom risotto and aged Italian cheeses such as Parmigiano Reggiano or mature Pecorino. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatics and finesse. Decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended, especially in its youth, to allow the aromatics to fully open and the tannins to soften, revealing the wine’s full depth and complexity.

Producer
The Vinum is a quality‑driven producer that focuses on classic, terroir‑expressive wines from Italy’s most renowned appellations, with a particular emphasis on Piedmont’s noble Nebbiolo. Working with carefully selected vineyards in La Morra, The Vinum aims to marry traditional Barolo craftsmanship—long cask aging, patient bottle maturation—with a precise, modern attention to detail. Their 2016 Barolo Riserva DOCG, rewarded with 92 points from James Suckling and a 4.5‑star rating on Vivino, underscores the estate’s commitment to harnessing great vintages and translating them into wines of depth, longevity and regional authenticity.
