Tenuta San Guido Sassicaia 2023 is a landmark Bolgheri red, made primarily from Cabernet Sauvignon with Cabernet Franc. A pioneer of the Super Tuscan style, Sassicaia is also the only Italian wine to have its own dedicated appellation, Bolgheri Sassicaia DOC.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Sassicaia shows an intense, deep red colour. The nose opens with blackcurrant and dark cherry, alongside notes of cedar, tobacco and spice. On the palate, it is concentrated yet poised, with silky tannins, layered flavour and a long, elegant finish.
Enjoy it in its youth after allowing it time to breathe, or cellar it for further development. Sassicaia is known for its capacity to mature beautifully over many years; the precise drinking window for the 2023 vintage will depend on storage conditions and personal preference.
Production
The Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc are grown on Tenuta San Guido’s elevated Bolgheri parcels, where limestone, stones and gravel meet the moderating influence of coastal breezes and Tuscany’s warm climate. The estate’s stony terrain gives Sassicaia its name—meaning “place of many stones”—and contributes to the wine’s balance of richness and freshness. Specific harvesting and vinification details for the 2023 vintage are not provided.
Food & Serving
Serve at around 16–18°C. Its depth and structure make it a natural match for roast lamb, grilled or braised beef, game and aged hard cheeses. Decant for about one to two hours before serving, particularly when enjoying it young, to let its aromas open.
Producer
Tenuta San Guido helped establish Bolgheri as a source of world-class red wine through Sassicaia, whose Cabernet-led style challenged expectations of Italian winemaking and inspired the Super Tuscan category. Its standing is reflected in the wine’s unique Bolgheri Sassicaia DOC appellation, a distinction that sets it apart within Italy.
