Steininger Verjus Muskateller Alkoholfri

Steininger Verjus Muskateller is a naturally alcohol-free, sparkling alternative made from 100% Muskateller grapes. Rather than producing wine and removing the alcohol, Weingut Steininger presses the grapes while they are still young and unripe, preserving their vibrant acidity and expressive aroma. The name verjus comes from the French *vert jus*, meaning “green juice”, and reflects this traditional approach to using early-harvested grapes in a fresh, modern drink.

Tasting Notes
Bright pale yellow in colour, with almost silver-green reflections. The nose is intensely aromatic, combining fresh Muscat grapes with citrus, grapefruit, floral notes and a subtle touch of exotic fruit. On the palate, lively bubbles and pronounced acidity create a crisp, refreshing impression. The natural fruitiness brings a gentle sweetness alongside the zesty acidity, resulting in a balanced, thirst-quenching drink rather than a conventional grape juice. The 2025 edition contains approximately 9.1 g of sugar per 100 ml and 7.8 g/l acidity. It is best enjoyed young and fresh, as its aromatic character and sparkle are not intended for extended ageing.

Production
Made from 100% Muskateller grapes harvested early by hand, before full ripeness, the grapes are gently pressed and the juice is filtered. It is then blended with sparkling water and bottled under pressure, creating the drink’s fine, lively carbonation. Produced by Weingut Steininger in Langenlois, within Austria’s Kamptal region, this Verjus showcases the cool-climate freshness and natural acidity associated with the area while taking the vineyard’s raw material in a distinctive alcohol-free direction.

Food & Serving
Serve well chilled at approximately 6–8°C in a wine glass or sparkling wine glass to highlight its aromas and effervescence. Its refreshing acidity and floral-citrus profile make it a natural partner for salads, sushi, seafood, ceviche, fresh goat’s cheese, light poultry dishes and mildly spiced Asian cuisine. It also works beautifully as an aperitif or celebratory non-alcoholic alternative. Decanting is not recommended; open shortly before serving and enjoy while fresh.

Founded in 1980, Weingut Steininger is based in Langenlois in Austria’s Kamptal and is particularly recognised for Grüner Veltliner, Riesling and sparkling wines. The family works with approximately 160 hectares of vineyards in and around Langenlois, combining a strong regional identity with an innovative approach to wine production. With its Verjus range, Steininger has created an alternative to de-alcoholised wine by focusing on the natural acidity and aromatics of unripe grapes. The Muskateller version is the newest addition to the range and received 91 points at the Falstaff Alkoholfrei Trophy 2026 in the Ready to Drink category.
