Staatsweingüter Kloster Eberbach’s 1989 Steinberger Riesling Eiswein Versteigerung is a rare auction wine from one of the Rheingau’s most celebrated vineyard sites. Made from Riesling grapes harvested at exceptional ripeness and pressed while naturally frozen, it combines concentrated sweetness with the balancing freshness characteristic of fine German Eiswein. A mature collector’s bottle, it offers a distinctive taste of Rheingau wine history in a 0.75-litre format.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, this mature Eiswein is expected to show a deep golden to amber hue, depending on its storage history. The nose is richly expressive, with concentrated stone-fruit and dried-fruit aromas, hints of honey and caramel, and the complex, evolved notes that can develop in a well-cellared sweet Riesling. On the palate, it offers intense fruit concentration balanced by vibrant acidity, with flavours of ripe peach, apricot, candied citrus and honey followed by a long, lingering finish. As a 1989 vintage, it is best appreciated as a mature wine; its condition and remaining aging potential will depend greatly on provenance, fill level and storage. It is recommended to enjoy it at its current stage rather than assuming further development will improve every bottle.

Production
The wine comes from Steinberg, a historic Rheingau vineyard associated with Kloster Eberbach and known for its favourable conditions for Riesling. For this Eiswein, the grapes were left on the vine until very late in the season and harvested at temperatures below freezing. They were pressed while frozen, leaving much of the water behind as ice and concentrating the sugar, acidity and flavour in the must. The resulting wine was presented as a Versteigerung, or auction wine, a designation reserved for particularly distinctive and sought-after German bottlings.

Food & Serving
Serve well chilled, ideally around 8–10°C, allowing a few minutes in the glass for the aromas to open. Its concentrated fruit and lively acidity make it an excellent partner for fruit-based desserts, apple or apricot tart, crème brûlée and pâtisserie, while its sweetness also works beautifully with blue cheese and mature, salty cheeses. Decanting is generally unnecessary for a delicate mature Eiswein; instead, open it shortly before serving and pour carefully if sediment is present.
