Description
A rare auction-bottled Riesling Trockenbeerenauslese from the historic 1986 vintage, produced by Staatsweingüter Kloster Eberbach from the celebrated Hochheimer Domdechaney vineyard in the Rheingau. Made only from exceptionally concentrated, noble-rot-affected grapes, this is a collector’s wine that combines remarkable sweetness with the freshness needed for long ageing. Its rarity and advanced vintage make it especially appealing for connoisseurs and collectors of mature German Riesling.
Tasting Notes
The wine displays an intense golden colour, potentially deepening towards amber with age. Its mature nose is richly layered, offering aromas of ripe peach, apricot and honey alongside delicate mineral nuances and the complex, candied notes associated with a well-aged Trockenbeerenauslese.
On the palate, it is full-bodied and opulent, with concentrated sweetness balanced by vibrant Riesling acidity. The finish is exceptionally long and intense, leaving a lasting impression of ripe stone fruit, honey and mineral freshness. A 1986 Trockenbeerenauslese can develop for many decades when well stored; its precise condition and remaining ageing potential will depend on provenance and cellar history.
Production
The wine originates from the Hochheimer Domdechaney, one of the Rheingau’s prestigious vineyard sites, where Riesling benefits from a favourable climate and soils that contribute both ripeness and mineral character. Trockenbeerenauslese is produced from individually selected, naturally shrivelled grapes, typically concentrated by noble rot. The grapes are harvested by hand in multiple careful passes, followed by gentle pressing and fermentation; however, detailed technical information for this specific 1986 auction bottling is not available.
Food & Serving
Serve well chilled at approximately 10–12°C, allowing a little time in the glass for its mature aromas to unfold. It is excellent with fruit-based desserts, crème brûlée, pâtisserie, blue cheese or foie gras, and can also be enjoyed on its own as a luxurious aperitif. Decanting is not essential, but carefully standing the bottle upright before opening and serving it gently can help separate any natural sediment; a short decant may be considered if the wine appears closed.
Producer
Staatsweingüter Kloster Eberbach is among Germany’s most historic wine estates. Kloster Eberbach was founded by Cistercian monks in 1136 and has played a defining role in the development of quality viticulture in the Rheingau for centuries. Today, the Staatsweingüter continue this tradition across renowned vineyard sites, including Hochheim, with a particular reputation for distinguished Rieslings and prestigious auction wines such as this rare 1986 Trockenbeerenauslese.
