Description
A rare and highly collectible Riesling Trockenbeerenauslese from the celebrated Hochheimer Domdechaney vineyard, the 1989 vintage combines exceptional concentration with the vibrant acidity that gives great German sweet wines their longevity. Produced by the historic Staatsweingüter Kloster Eberbach, it represents one of Germany’s most prestigious traditional wine styles and is available only in limited quantities.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this mature Riesling shows a luminous golden hue, potentially deepening toward amber with further bottle age. The bouquet is rich and expressive, revealing honey, dried apricot, raisin and other preserved fruits alongside delicate exotic spice and mineral nuances. On the palate, it is opulent and concentrated, with luscious sweetness balanced by refreshing Riesling acidity. The finish is long, layered and persistent, with the balance and structure expected of a top-quality Trockenbeerenauslese.
The 1989 vintage is already an impressive mature wine, though its future will depend greatly on provenance and storage conditions. Well-preserved bottles may continue to develop complex notes of caramel, saffron and dried citrus over many years. As with any mature collectible wine, the condition of the bottle and closure should be considered when assessing its drinking window.
Production
The grapes come from Hochheimer Domdechaney in the Rheingau, a renowned site whose mineral-rich soils and favourable local microclimate are particularly suited to producing richly concentrated Riesling. Trockenbeerenauslese is made from individually selected grapes affected by noble rot, which naturally dehydrates the berries and concentrates their sugars, acids and aromas. The fruit is hand-harvested at very low yields and gently vinified to preserve its intensity, fragrance and balance.
Food & Serving
Serve well chilled at approximately 10–12°C, allowing a few minutes in the glass for the aromas to unfold. Decanting is generally unnecessary, although a careful transfer may be appropriate if the mature bottle contains sediment; otherwise, open gently and pour slowly. Its sweetness and acidity make it an excellent partner for fruit-based desserts, crème brûlée, blue cheese, foie gras and mature hard cheeses. It can also be enjoyed on its own as a contemplative finale to a special meal.

Kloster Eberbach was founded by Cistercian monks in the 12th century and played a formative role in the development of viticulture in the Rheingau. Today, the estate is recognised for its extensive vineyard holdings, its connection to some of the region’s finest sites and its preservation of classic German wine styles, including age-worthy Riesling Prädikatsweine.
