Description
Staatsweingüter Kloster Eberbach’s 1989 Erbacher Siegelsberg Riesling Trockenbeerenauslese is a rare and highly indulgent expression of one of the Rheingau’s most respected sites. Made from intensely concentrated, late-harvested Riesling grapes, this mature dessert wine combines opulent sweetness with the vibrant acidity that gives great German Riesling its remarkable longevity.
Tasting Notes
The wine displays a deep golden hue, reflecting its considerable age and concentration. Its expressive bouquet reveals ripe and dried fruits alongside honeyed notes and a subtle mineral character. On the palate, it is rich, full-bodied and luxurious, with layers of mature fruit, honey and finely balanced sweetness supported by refreshing acidity. The finish is exceptionally long and harmonious. As a 1989 Trockenbeerenauslese, it is already a mature wine of considerable complexity; under excellent storage conditions, it may continue to develop, although its future will depend on the condition of the individual bottle.
Production
This Trockenbeerenauslese comes from the Erbacher Siegelsberg vineyard in the Rheingau, a region renowned for producing age-worthy Riesling. The designation indicates grapes harvested at an exceptionally high level of ripeness, typically from individually selected, naturally shrivelled berries with concentrated sugars and flavours. The resulting wine is crafted to preserve the grape’s richness while retaining the acidity essential for balance and longevity. Specific details regarding the 1989 harvest and vinification are not available.
Food & Serving
Serve well chilled, ideally at around 8–10°C, to highlight the wine’s freshness and keep its sweetness beautifully balanced. Its concentrated fruit and honeyed character make it a natural partner for fruit-based desserts, crème brûlée, apple tart, blue cheese and foie gras. It can also be enjoyed on its own as a memorable finale to a festive meal. Decanting is not normally necessary, though carefully standing the bottle upright before opening and pouring gently can help preserve any sediment in this mature wine.
Producer
Staatsweingüter Kloster Eberbach is associated with Kloster Eberbach, the historic former Cistercian monastery in the Rheingau founded in 1136. The estate has played a defining role in the region’s wine culture for centuries and is particularly known for its outstanding Riesling and Pinot Noir from prestigious vineyards. Its long winemaking tradition and focus on terroir have made Kloster Eberbach one of Germany’s most important and recognisable wine producers.
