Description
A remarkable piece of Rheingau wine history, this 1971 Steinberger Riesling Trockenbeerenauslese was produced by the Staatsweingüter Eltville at Kloster Eberbach and offered through the estate’s prestigious auction tradition. Made from individually selected, botrytis-affected Riesling berries, it combines extraordinary concentration with the freshness needed for decades of graceful development. Presented in a 0.7-litre bottle, this is a rare collector’s wine and a distinguished choice for special occasions.
Tasting Notes
The wine shows a deep golden hue, potentially with amber highlights reflecting its long maturation. Its mature bouquet is expected to reveal layers of dried apricot, preserved peach, honey, raisin and candied citrus, complemented by spice and the characteristic earthy complexity that can emerge in noble sweet Rieslings with age.
On the palate, the wine offers impressive richness and concentration, balanced by Riesling’s vibrant acidity. Notes of ripe and dried fruit, honey, caramelised citrus and subtle spice unfold with considerable complexity and length. At over five decades old, it is best regarded as a fully mature wine to enjoy now; its condition and remaining vitality will depend greatly on storage history and bottle provenance.
Production
Steinberg is one of the Rheingau’s most distinguished vineyard sites and is closely associated with Kloster Eberbach. The Trockenbeerenauslese designation indicates an exceptionally late harvest of shrivelled, noble-rot-affected berries, selected for their intense natural sugar and flavour concentration. The precise harvesting and cellar details for this historic auction bottling are not provided, but the wine was made in the traditional style of premium German Riesling and subsequently matured for many years in bottle.
Food & Serving
Serve lightly chilled at approximately 10–12°C, allowing the wine time to open in the glass. Its sweetness and acidity make it a superb partner for fruit-based desserts, crème brûlée, pâtisserie and blue or mature hard cheeses. It can also be enjoyed on its own as an aperitif or contemplative final course. Decanting is not essential, but a gentle transfer may help separate any sediment; for a fragile mature wine, opening and serving carefully from the bottle is often preferable.
Producer
Kloster Eberbach was founded by Cistercian monks in 1136 and has played a formative role in the history of German wine, particularly in the Rheingau. The Staatsweingüter Eltville, associated with the monastery’s historic estate, became renowned for producing and auctioning some of the region’s finest Rieslings and noble sweet wines. The 1971 Steinberger Trockenbeerenauslese reflects both the prestige of the Steinberg vineyard and the enduring significance of Kloster Eberbach’s auction wines.
