Description
A remarkable piece of Rheingau wine history, the 1945 Steinberger Riesling Trockenbeerenauslese from Staatsweingüter Eltville (Kloster Eberbach) is an exceptionally rare sweet wine from one of Germany’s most distinguished vineyard sites. Produced in a historic vintage and made from highly concentrated, botrytised grapes, it offers collectors the chance to experience a mature expression of Steinberg Riesling with extraordinary provenance and character.
Tasting Notes
The wine presents a deep golden hue, likely enriched by its many decades of bottle age. Its aromatic profile is intensely mature and concentrated, with notes of ripe and preserved fruit, honey and the complex nuances associated with aged sweet Riesling. On the palate, remarkable richness is balanced by refreshing acidity, creating a layered, harmonious and finely poised impression. As a wine from 1945, it should be approached as a historic collector’s bottle; its condition and storage history will be important factors in its current drinking experience.
Production
The grapes were carefully harvested by hand from the prized Steinberg vineyard in the Rheingau. As a Trockenbeerenauslese, the wine was made from exceptionally concentrated berries, traditionally affected by noble rot and often partially shrivelled on the vine. This concentration gives the wine its pronounced sweetness, depth and longevity, while the naturally high acidity of Riesling provides balance. The designation “Cabinet” appears alongside the Trockenbeerenauslese description in the original product information and is retained here as part of the historic naming.
Food & Serving
Serve lightly chilled, around 10–12°C, allowing the wine’s mature aromas and complexity to unfold in the glass. It is a natural partner for refined desserts, fruit-based pastries, crème brûlée and blue cheeses, while its rarity also makes it ideal for a celebratory tasting on its own. Because of its age, handle the bottle gently and stand it upright before opening; decant only carefully and briefly if sediment is present, as prolonged exposure to air may diminish a fragile mature wine.
Producer
Kloster Eberbach is one of Germany’s historic wine estates, with a winemaking tradition dating back to its foundation by Cistercian monks in the 12th century. Based in the Rheingau, the estate has long been associated with outstanding Riesling and some of the region’s most prestigious vineyard sites, including Steinberg. Staatsweingüter Eltville, the former state wine estate connected with Kloster Eberbach, represents an important chapter in the history and preservation of Rheingau wine culture.
