Description
The 1979 Steinberger Riesling Eiswein-Beerenauslese Versteigerung from Staatsweingüter Eltville, Kloster Eberbach, is a rare Rheingau sweet wine from one of Germany’s most historic wine estates. Made from hand-selected Riesling grapes and presented in the estate’s prestigious auction style, it offers a distinctive opportunity to experience a mature German dessert wine with remarkable depth and complexity.
Tasting Notes
The wine displays an elegant golden-yellow colour. Its mature bouquet is rich and expressive, with aromas of ripe peach, apricot and mango layered with delicate honeyed notes. On the palate, it is full-bodied and concentrated, balancing luscious sweetness with the refreshing acidity characteristic of Riesling. The finish is long, intense and lingering, with the fruit and honey tones continuing well after the final sip.
As a 1979 Eiswein-Beerenauslese, this is a mature bottle intended for contemplative enjoyment. Its sweetness and acidity have supported extended ageing, although the condition of any historic bottle will depend on storage and provenance.
Production
Produced in the Steinberg vineyard in the Rheingau from Riesling grapes selected at exceptional ripeness, this Eiswein-Beerenauslese reflects the region’s tradition of producing concentrated, naturally sweet wines. The fruit was hand-selected before being made into a rich dessert wine and subsequently matured for many years in the cellars of Kloster Eberbach. Specific harvest and vinification details are not available.
Food & Serving
Serve well chilled, at approximately 8–10°C, allowing a few minutes in the glass for its mature aromas to develop. It is an excellent match for foie gras, blue cheeses, fruit-based desserts, crème brûlée and desserts featuring peach or apricot. It can also be enjoyed on its own as a contemplative finale to a meal. Decanting is generally not essential, but careful decanting may be considered if sediment is present; open gently and handle the bottle with care.
Producer
Staatsweingüter Eltville, associated with Kloster Eberbach, represents one of the Rheingau’s most historically significant wine institutions. Kloster Eberbach was founded by Cistercian monks in the 12th century and played a formative role in establishing the region’s viticultural identity. Its Steinberg vineyard and long tradition of producing premium Riesling have made the estate particularly renowned, while auction bottlings such as this one reflect the exceptional quality and collectable character of its wines.
