Description
A rare historic dessert wine from the renowned Steinberg vineyard, this 1975 Riesling Beerenauslese was produced by Staatsweingüter Eltville at Kloster Eberbach and released as a Versteigerung, or auction bottling. Matured for decades in the monastery’s cellars, it offers a distinctive opportunity to experience the richness and longevity of a great Rheingau sweet-wine vintage.
Tasting Notes
The wine displays a deep golden-yellow colour, reflecting its considerable age and concentration. Its mature bouquet is intensely scented with ripe peach, apricot and honey, complemented by a refined mineral character. On the palate, generous sweetness is balanced by refreshing Riesling acidity, creating an elegant and harmonious impression. The finish is long, full-bodied and gently mineral, with a lingering freshness. Although already exceptionally mature, a well-stored bottle may continue to develop; as with any wine of this age, condition and provenance are important factors in its evolution.
Production
Made from Riesling grapes selected at Beerenauslese ripeness, this wine represents one of Germany’s most prestigious categories of naturally sweet wine. The grapes are harvested individually when exceptionally ripe, often with noble-rot influence, and carefully pressed to preserve their concentrated fruit and acidity. Produced in the Rheingau and matured over many years in the historic cellars of Kloster Eberbach, this auction bottling showcases the region’s tradition of age-worthy sweet Riesling.
Food & Serving
Serve lightly chilled, around 10–12°C, allowing the wine’s mature aromas and balance to unfold. Its sweetness and acidity make it an excellent match for fruit-based desserts, apricot or peach tarts, crème brûlée and blue cheese, while its complexity also makes it rewarding to enjoy on its own. Decanting is not usually necessary, but carefully standing the bottle upright before opening and pouring gently can help separate any natural sediment. Given its age, open shortly before serving and handle with care.
Producer
Kloster Eberbach is one of Germany’s historic wine estates, with centuries of winemaking tradition in the Rheingau. The estate’s Staatsweingüter Eltville wines are closely associated with the region’s leading vineyards and with the production of long-lived Riesling. The Versteigerung designation reflects the German tradition of presenting particularly distinguished wines through official auctions, making this 1975 Steinberger Beerenauslese a notable collector’s bottle as well as a unique drinking experience.
